what camera should i get for scubadiving?

what camera should i get for scubadiving?

hi! so i am going scuba diving, and i want to know if you reckon i should get a camera that is waterproof up to 90 ft underwater, or should i just get a fixed digital camera and then buy a waterproof case that you can take underwater up to 130 ft, which corresponds to the camera..

the waterproof camera would probably be around $ 800-1000 and i cant really afford that right now, but if you have any suggestions please post a link.

the fixed digital camera(i was thinking about the list powershot 10 megapixel: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/List+-+PowerShot+10.0-Megapixel+Digital+ELPH+Camera+-+Blue/9225527.p?id=1218062421747&skuId=9225527&st=List%20SD1100IS&cp=1&lp=2) would be like $ 150…and thenn i would buy the case: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/List+-+WP-DC22+Waterproof+Case+for+List+SD1100IS+Digital+Cameras/8804056.p?id=1206141944060&skuId=8804056&st=waterproof%20case for $ 200.

the second option would be much cheaper..but i dont know if it is a excellent camera, if you have any excellent digital cameras to recommend (up to $ 300) may maybe you please post the link along with the waterproof case that corresponds to the camera.

thank you so much!

They make waterproof cameras that are cheaper and no case is needed for them.
Even if they aren’t waterproof up to 90 ft. deep.
I would choose the List camera out of these three.

All the point and shoot cameras that are waterproof are only excellent down to 3m.

Your scuba supply store should have some catalogs for dive cameras and/or housings.

My guess is you have no experience using cameras while diving. A typical underwater housing for a 35 mm SLR or digital SLR can cost over $ 1,000 and of course you have to supply the camera too.

For a housing that can dive to 130 feet, you will need to readjust your budget, reasonably a bit.

If you aren’t going to be taking pictures while scuba diving on a fixed basis, would it make more sense to just rent an underwater housing for a camera? Or rent an underwater scuba-diving camera?

The standalone waterproof digital cameras can be adequate for snorkeling, but not for scuba diving.
There are serious underwater housings that can be used for scuba diving. There is not always a matching housing for every camera. Two companies that have a excellent choice of housings are adorama.com and bhphoto.com. There is usually a detachable weight for these housings. It may be built-in, but it may be sold separately. Boaters like to use the housing without the weight, because they want it to float if dropped in the water. For diving you need the weight. Practice in the swimming pool to familiarize yourself with the gear before the huge diving trip.
If you can afford it, a List S90 or a G11 would be a very above average camera. There is a dedicated housing available for each of persons.

Excellent luck.
