What camcorder is better, the Canon GL2, or the Sony Vx2100 and why?

What camcorder is better, the Canon GL2, or the Sony Vx2100 and why?

I am mainly going to use them to video tape basketball games, and school drama productions. I also put them on dvds. Also do u know where i could get a really good price on either one?

First they are both great cameras. If you are going to be in low light conditions, I think the Sony has a slight advantage.

Buy it from B+H Photo, they are a real company in NYC and they do internet sales. Get the MACK warrenty on it as well.

I have the VX2K and love it, mine broke and MACK took care of it without a hitch.

DO NOT BUY FROM A PLACE THAT IS SELING IT FOR CHEAP MONEY! IT WILL BE A RIP OFF!

These things are great and they are worth every penny that they cost. When it comes to any camera over $ 400 I deal soley with B+H.

You will be glad you did.

You would need to spend in excess of $ 3500 in order to get a HD camcorder that can beat the video quality of a MiniDV camcorder like the GL2.

the short answer is no.
the long answer is no. image pixel count is only one dimension of quality. the typical consumer HD camera uses AVCHD codec so it only records 4 HD pictures per second. the missing frames have to be guessed at on playback by interpolation. that is why skateboarders and action sports people stick with miniDV which makes 30 real fps, no guessing or interpolation used on playback. the only good subject for consumer HD is to document paint drying on a wall. it is useless for motion. the canon gl2 is a 3 ccd system camera, it produces excellent full saturated color in many situations that a single ccd camera cannot. the third criteria of quality is digital data rate. miniDV is 25 mbps, most consumer HD is 6 mbps. there are lots of other reasons a consumer camera does not hold up in comparison.

And to continue with the world of no theme – the lenses in higher end cameras are much higher quality, but that comes at a high price. They’re also much bigger, so you get more light in and hence a better signal to noise ratio. Not directly relevant to the image quality, higher end cameras have much more control, and include work flow management tools that the amateur doesn’t need.

The shots of the grass are all handheld. The other shots were made with a small weighted handle to stabilize some of the sudden shakes and motion I was making. I worked with the image color and frame-rate of the video to capture this look.
