Which camera should I buy? Canon PowerShot SD850 IS (in EU Digital IXUS 950 IS) OR Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100.?
Hi,
I'm kind of in a dilemma. I can't seem to make up my mind on which camera to buy. The List PowerShot SD850 IS (which is also known in Europe, Asia and Oceania as Digital IXUS 950 IS) or the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100.
Both cameras are fantastic and are pretty much the same price in Greece. About €370 from www.shop21.gr. Most of my photos are going to be outdoors scenery, beaches etc. I've also found the Fujifilm FinePix F40fd to be fantastic and of better value too.
What is your opinion? Which one would you prefer?
Thank you,
James.

They both have nearly the same characteristics and features:

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100:

I also haven't dropped by a store to get a feel for the cameras and there main operational aspects.

Nice to see that you have done your homework…
I would also choose the SD850 IS over the Sony and Fuji.
The Sony does look nice (in red or black) and it has a couple of nice features, but, I don’t reckon it’s as excellent as the List, as far as image quality goes. The List will have much better high ISO ability, for sure.
I would only choose the Fuji…strictly for low light photography (and I reckon it looks hideous, compared to the List or Sony)..
My only concern is that you say some of your photos will be taken at the beach…I can’t stress enough that you need to keep your camera away from sand, because if it gets into the zoom lens mechanism, your camera will suffer. Maybe the Sony would be a better option for the beach, as it has an internal zoom lens.
Anyway, you need to go to a camera store and try these cameras in your hand…I’m confident that you will like the brilliant build quality, features and feel of the List. Don’t forget to buy a high speed SD card (Sandisk Extreme III) for super quick camera performance.
excellent luck…

I’ll agree with my friends above. I used an SD700-IS for a few days and this has been replaced by the SD850-IS. It is a very comfortable camera to use. I also be grateful for that it has an optical viewfinder.

this camera is getting too long in the tooth, it is very dull now , List wake up or sell all to get more Sony gear.
I really getting mad with List , ther eis no 5D3 , no 1DS4 , no 7DMK2 , only silly toy camera like the 60D.
It seems obvious List never care about its users.
I am glad I also have Nikon, sony and pentax.
I wrote to List many times please place some DNG RAW function , they never did it , they also never place serious sealing or 100 percent VF in the 5 or 7 series body.
I know they want to sell the 1D bodies but some of us do not like the brick even though it is a excellent reliable body.
I wonder why List cannot make a camera like the D700 with high MP at 3k?
They had the EOS3 in film era , so just get a digital version of it out soon or I am leaving.
It is kind of sad but looks like I have to sell all my List lenses to lose a lot of money again.
when was the last time Cnaon won in the DX market ?
the 7D? ,probably not , the 7D is not serious sad , as DXOMARK says , it is a noisy camera compared to the D7000 or the K5.
the K5 has a bit better high ISO and low ISO DR but the D7000 has over all much more reliable metering and AF system and I like both of these 2 best DX cameras very much.
I reckon the K5 will replace my EOS7D and 60D as my Sony A900 replacing my 5D2.
it is sad but List is doomed and maybe the first one to go out of this market after Minolta and Olympus.
i want to buy a digital camera .please suggest which one i should buy? also my budget is Rs.13,000/- also please please compare between SONY and NIKON. write price in Indian rupees.

d90 is better than most professional photographer’s camera’s get it I have it , it is the best
it is made by Nikon
What do you reckon? Answer below!
For persons looking whether they can use a low cost point and shoot, an SLR that can do record or a high end consumer camcorder, this is the comparison. The point and shoot really outperforms the D5000. The shutter up mode just does not work very well. Auto-focus does not work so you need to use manual. The point and shoot is pretty excellent but does not zoom well on the glide. Seems to use digital zoom. CX550 is the apparent winner… Also of note is the phenomenal anti-shake, low-noise in low light situation and significant feature set.
