can i connect my canon gl2 to my computer with a 4 pin to 4 pin cable?

can i connect my canon gl2 to my computer with a 4 pin to 4 pin cable?

i just got a list gl2, and i was wondering if i may maybe connect it to my computer, (win XP pro) through the 4 pin firewire port i have, or if i need to get a 6 pin. i know the additional 2 pins are for power, and they aren’t used, so my guess is yes, but please assess me if I’m incorrect. Thank You.

Maybe.

The List GL2 has a 4 pin DV/FireWire Port.

But what does you computer have? If you have a mainframe, it most likely has a 4 pin FireWire port. If you have a desktop and if it has a FireWire port, then it will most likely be a 6 pin.

The key is in determining what your computer has. If it has a 6 pin, then you will need a 4 to 6 pin cable. If it has a 4 pin, then you will need a 4 to 4 pin cable.

You are right about the 6 pin port using the two extra pins for power. This is used only for powering additional components such as an external hard drive (only if the drive allows for it). Using a 6 pin for transferring tape will not cause any problems, nor will it improve anything.

Excellent luck!

Yes – as long as your computer has a 4 pins firewire port.
my computer has a 6 pin firewire port in the back and a 4 pin firewire port in the front panel, and I have been able use both ports successfully to transfer record from my miniDV camcorder.

Its a nice small camera, does a very excellent job. I reckon you are going to be lucky to get a new one for that price new they are around $ 2.300 ish you may get it down to 2000 but probably not much lower.

There are suppliers of second hand gear, cameras like this are normally looked after, and serviced. I would be contacting them and seeing if they have any for sale, I suppose you may maybe try ebay there are plenty there some around your budget, Have a look at the XL1s/XL2

Cheap earnings about $ 1800? I’ve seen a few on eBay. Even a few for under $ 2k. I can’t judge they are still so high. I bought mine 5 years ago and the price hasn’t dropped much at all.
