Can Best Buy deny me of a job because of my DUI?

Can Best Buy deny me of a job because of my DUI?

I was convicted of a DUI recently (Stupid mistake, won’t happen again). I’m applying at many jobs as possible and each job application says “a criminal record does not automatically deny you of a employment” or something to that effect. Best Buy had one of these statements and the hiring administrator at one Best Buy wanted to save me the time and effort of the interview process and told me flat out “we can’t hire you because of your criminal record”. Aren’t they violating a state or centralized discrimination law?

Thanks
I don’t blame them for not hiring me because of my DUI (if I was in HR, I would do the same) but why place “your criminal record won’t automatically deny you of a job” on the application if it did? Isn’t that some kind of falsification? For example, if I apply at a job and they had a statement that said “life Asian won’t deny you of a job” but it did, why place that statement down if I’m going to be denied anyway? (that was an extreme example and I know there are laws against racial discrimination but you get what I mean)

I suggest that you take an aptitude test. An aptitude test assesses your skills and your interests and matches you to the careers that are right for you.
Check with the high school adviser for one or your college/university (they have some awesome tests). Or, failing persons, go to the workforce development agency (unemployment office) One really excellent one is called JobFit. Beware of the internet scams.
Once you take the test it will help identify careers that take small or no education apparent up to a doctorate. Hope this helps.

I had the excellent fortune of attending a business talks sponsored by the Autism Society of MN (AuSM) last night. Temple spoke, but to me the most inspiring talks were by representatives of Best Buy, 3M and Cargill. All three companies are now looking for and hiring public on the spectrum for their unique strengths and values. Based on their success tales, clearly it’s paying off. Hopefully, this “excellent news” will be heard by the HR departments of any business needing reliable, honest, intelligent, skilled employees. Spread the word!
