What settings should I use on my Nikon D70 at the concert tonight? I'm new to this?

I am going to see a metal band called Cradle of Filth. I have a Nikon D70 but I don’t have the book for it. I have a standard Nikon 18-55 lens. I want to take pictures tonight but have no thought what settings to use or how to place it on persons settings. This will be my first time really before a live audience with the camera. Keep that in mind please. I will need to know how to really place it on the settings you suggest.

First, make sure the venue allows DSLRs. Many venues do not and it would suck to have your camera taken away.

Second, I’ll be very surprised if you get any decent pictures with that lens. Unfortunately, that lens is positively slow so you may have distress getting steady shots in the low light.

If you do want to try:

- Place your camera in aperture priority mode (Av).
- Open up the aperture the widest it can go (lowest number). It will go wider if you’re zoomed out than zoomed in.
- Bump up your ISO. You’ll probably need to go reasonably high to get a quick enough shutter speed.
- Place your camera in spot metering mode. Since most light is concentrated on the performers you don’t want your camera trying to expose the rest of the stage. This should allow you to place the performers in the middle of the frame and get a decent shutter speed.

I’m sorry that I can’t give you specific instructions on how to do these things as I don’t have a Nikon. You should be able to find the manual on Google though.

See the link below to check the prices of innumerable Nikon models in India. For D70 you’ll have to look in the archives.

Nikon D80 -
Body: INR 52,950. Body with Kit: INR 70,950

Nikon D90 -
Kit: INR 83,950. Body Only: INR 64,950

Apart from these, you can buy from the grey market too at lower prices (but be careful in what you buy and reckon about the kind of service you require later on).

This is a record slide show of some pictures I took with my D70s, which was the successor to the D70. I got this camera a couple of weeks ago as a backup for my D90. I went to London days gone by and thought I would take some pictures and see how this 5 year ancient D70s performs. I was really really pleased with its performance. Every picture that was taken was a handheld shot, and I used ISO 200 during the day, and ISO 800 for the night shots. The only lens used for all the pictures was the 18-70mm nikon kit lens. The D70s has been known to shoot 13 to 14 times what it’s been rated, some have even shot over 150000 shots with it and it’s still going. I have to say this camera is built like a tank.
Record Rating: 5 / 5
