Can Olympus XD-Picture Cards, 128MB be repaired by someone? I have 2 that I cannot use and will not format!?

I bought these Cards to use with my Olympus digital camera, and they used to work fantastic! Now though, I cannot use them at all, and they always come up with “Card Error” whenever I try formatting them in the camera. My computer doesn’t even recognize them if I place them in the Card Reader Slot! Can they be repaired by someone, or are they junk now? Does anyone know the answer to this? Has anyone else ever had this experience? Are these Cards supposed to be guaranteed for life? Who’s life? Please advise!

xD cards are not guaranteed for life. Their format cycle life time is not even confirmed.

xD cards have a major drawback in that they have exposed contacts which can be hurt by fiddle with prints or additional eroding materials.

You might be able to “clean” the contacts and get the cards to “read”. First use a soft moist lint free cloth to wipe away any foreign material off the contacts. A microfiber cloth might work just as well.

The cost to “repair” a card would cost far more than it would cost to replace the card.

Olympus used to use SmartMedia cards which had the same problematic design. Exposed contacts and a thin hurt prone case,

If you end up replacing your camera, look for one that uses SD or CF cards … they are much sturdier and do not have exposed contacts.

I have an Olympus Zoom series camera that I got for my birthday in 1991. (Gods, I feel ancient) It has a light leak on the door. My pictures have a red streak along the left side. (color film) About how much would it cost to repair the leak? Would it be worth it, or is it best to buy a new camera? I want a digital camera regardless, but would still like a film camera. Thanks.

Sounds like the camera might be slightly bent. I doubt it is worth the repair bill. You can go to any camera shop and see what they have in used 35mm. With digital apt so well loved the market is getting flooded with 35mm that are in top shape for very small money. You may maybe end up with a nice List or Minolta for less than the repair of your Olympus.

The zoom series cameras at this point are likely not worth the cost of fixing. Some black electrical tape along the bottom edge of the film door will probably get you buy until you break down and replace the business…
