I sold my D40 for this beauty and would never go back. The [now sold] Sigma 18-200mm OS lens is slow and not all that sharp until stopped down, but for the range it gives and the positively excellent optical stabilisation, it’s not half terrible.

I HAVE NIKON D80 DIGITAL CAMERA. HOW I CAN TAKE QUALITY PICTURE OF GOLD / DIAMOND JEWELLERY? I AM USING LIGHT BOX INSTEAD OF USING NIKON FLASH LIGHT WITH CLOSEUP LENS BUT THE PICTURE IS FADING OUT. PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP ME IN THIS CASE.

If you’re placing the jewellery on the light box without any additional lighting from above the light from the box will be too strong and the jewellery will fade out.
You need additional stronger lighting from above the light box to make the lighting more balanced.
The best way to photograph jewellery is to use a light tent with at least two lighting units to provide even soft lighting. You can try making a light tent yourself or buy ready made ones from studio gear suppliers.

EDIT – I was assuming you were using a traditional light box and laying the jewellery on top of it. If you’re using a modern enclosed light box made for small item photography then it’s more likely that the items are overlit or you need to exchange your camera exposure.

We use a lightbox from these guys, and it’s brilliant: http://www.techlamps.co.uk/

All the jewellery on our site was taken using the digibox 12″/10″ with a Nikon D40X (macro lens essential). You can see the results here: http://www.kooqi.co.uk

Some of the silver items need re-working as they are over lit, but overall I reckon it’s a fantastic setup for minimal cost.

Feel free to contact me if you need more info.

What do you reckon? Answer below!

Perfect shutter release for Nikon D80 D70S. With the wireless shutter release, you can control the shutter of your camera from as far as 100m away. The package comes with a transmitter, a receiver and a battery.
