Here’s the final word from Steve’s Digicams. His reviews are always reliable:

If you’re looking for a light-weight, stylish, moderately-priced digicam that is versatile enough to handle most family events while getting you close to sports action or wildlife, the SONY Cyber-shot H1 should be high on your list. You should also consider the Canon PowerShot S2 IS. Both cameras carry similar specifications and are capable of delivering high-quality images. The S2 IS advantages include better Continuous AF tracking of moving subjects, industry-leading movie mode, articulating LCD monitor, faster shutter speeds, greater playback magnification, and greater continuous shooting speed and buffer depth. On the other hand, the H1 provides better indoor flash and AF-assist performance, a larger LCD monitor, lower image noise at high ISO settings, shorter shutter lag and faster AF performance.

DPReview, another great site for reviews, gives it a ‘highly recommended’. See here for the full review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydsch1/
As for the price, the best I can find from a reliable vendor is $ 299 from Wolf: http://www.wolfcamera.com/product/CLR542083043.htm

I have a Sony DSC-F717 I like it a lot it easy to use, takes great pics it is a little big but it is a very high end cammera with a great zoom with a Carl Zeiss lens the lens alone makes the camera great. I woul go to price grabber.com or if you are in no hurry you keep low bidding on ebay like I did it took a few weeks but I saved around $ 400 just by sitting in front of the puter a few hours. Good luck

sony digital camera review

One of the first days with my first camera in 2001:
www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscs75.asp

I have done the research on both cameras the Sony DSCH5 and the Kodak P712. I just don’t know which one will be the best to buy, I know what options each has, but the reviews on each has its pros and cons. So if someone could help me to decide either Sony or Kodak.

Sony…. they last longer!

I like Sony

I would get a Sony. Sony has extensive experience and expertise in computing and electronics, and Kodak has historically been more specialized to cameras. And since digital cameras interface with computers, televisions, and such, I’d just go with the Sony. More user-friendly and reliable across platforms, as it were.

check this one first:

For your reference, Sony does TV’s and Kodak does film.

There do not seem to be any pro reviews of the P712 yet, so it is hard to get lab result comparisons. It is apparently a follow-on to the 850, which got good reviews (but not quite as strong as the Sony H1,H2,H5 or the Canon S2, S3).

But Kodak has been trying to catch up, so maybe the 712 will be the one.

I have the Sony H1, and am very happy with the results.

The Kodak P712 is just out this month. Can you wait a while until the pros have a chance to study it?

If you want to buy soon, I would go with the Sony (or Canon S3 IS), based on history. But all the cameras have relative strengths and weaknesses, so you will probably be satisfied with any of this class of camera.

Good Luck
