I liked the balance between quality, price and features of the Nikon D70. In the current Nikon and Canon line-up which of the new models can be considered a successor to the Nikon D70 (or worthy competitor). I note the Nikon D40 seems very similar (if not outdated compared to newer models) to the D70 minus some features.

The D90 or D5000 are the newest models in that price range.

The D90 is the current Nikon equivalent in that particular niche in the lineup

Canon current equivalent to the D70 would likely be the 50D.

A quick summary of the Nikon evolution, generally based on increasing features:

Low-End Consumer – D50->D40(->D40x->D60 – the last two diverging to their own level as Nikon continued to sell the D40)
Low-Midrange Consumer – D5000 (new level)
Midrange Consumer – D70->D70s->D80->D90
Prosumer – D100->D200->D300
Prosumer FX – D700
Pro DX – D1/D1X->D2H/D2X->D2Hs/D2Xs
Pro FX – D3/D3X

With Canon its slightly more simple – as a general rule, the fewer digits you have, the higher-end the camera is and the higher number within the same number of digits is usually newer. The 5Ds are the notable exception to this general rule.

The D90 is the current equivalent for Nikon. As for Canon there really isn’t a direct equivalent. The D70, D80 and D90 are in a range to themselves. They are in between the entry level cameras and the advanced amateur/ pro models like the D300. Canon does not really have an in between model. They have the Rebels at the entry level point and then the 50D in the advanced amateur/pro level. The next step up with Canon is the full frame 5D MKII and 1D series.

The Lexar jumpSHOT is not reading my 8GB Extreme III SanDisk Card. The SanDisk support suggested I could use the camera as card reader. How can I connect the NIKON D70 to my PC to get the pictures off the flash card?

Answer by RAWR!
Hook your camera to your comuter, turn camera on, and it should show up in Windows Explorer. Go from there.

Use the USB cable that came with the camera to connect the camera to the computer. Use My Computer or Finder to view and move around the files.
