What is the best type of digital camera to buy?

What is the best type of digital camera to buy?

I already have a Olympus Stylus 830. I’m just looking for something with more mega pixels, closer zoom, and a very quick shutter time. Thanks for your help!

CANON!!!!!!!

Whatever fits your hand.
Seriously, get to a camera store. Hold all the models they have that fits your needs (megapixels) and then visit a discount chain- K-Mart, Walmart, or Sams.
Choose whether you want a Zoom DSLR (All in one) or a DSLR like the Canon Rebel or Sony A300. These are more expensive, but ya gets what ya pays fer. A DSLR lets you change lenses for different effects. (wanna take a picture of a dime…and nothing else?) Wanna see that person crosswise the canal up close? It really sounds like you may be ready to go into a DSLR. Again, go see what fits your hand…or it will remain in the closet. You won’t use it. If it fits, you’ll walk around the State Honest all day and your hand won’t get tired.
Question about features. Look on the internet. do your homework. look at the entry level offerings from Canon, Nikon, and Sony. These entry level are usually less vital and lack SOME of the features of the more advanced units. Amateur and Pro models use the same lenses and flashes as the entry level, but are larger w/ more features. As you go up to a fancier DSLR, you already will have lenses, sparkle, tripod, and more. And you will also know how to use the add’l features.
It sounds like you are getting frustrated with the limitations of your Stylus 830. That very same frustration drove me into SLR cameras so many being ago.
A couple notes:
Sony builds Anti-Shake – also called Vibration Reduction and image Stabilization – into the camera boy. That means that EVERY lens you place on it becomes a a “stabilized” lens by default. Since Sony bought their technology from Minolta, All Minolta Maxxum lenses also fit the Sony and be converted into Anti – shake.
Nikon lenses screw on backwards. Don’t forget that or you may drop the lens (ouch$ $ $ ) or need repair(ouch$ $ )

Megapixels matter very small. All modern cameras have more than enough. The only time that more megapixels is vital is if you are making huge enlargements. Even then you only need about 5mp on a point and shoot to get a excellent quality 8×10. Read the article in the link below for all the information you need on megapixels.

All point and shoot cameras have what is renowned as shutter lag. This is the time it takes for the camera to really take the picture after you press the shutter button. Some are better than others but they all have this conundrum.

The only cameras that don’t have this conundrum are SLR’s. With an SLR or digital SLR the picture is taken nearly instantaniously when you press the shutter. If you are shooting action there really is no substitute. With a DSLR the quantity of zoom depends on the lens you choose. If you want to step up to a DSLR take a look at the entry level models from Canon and Nikon. Pentax, Sony and Olympus are also excellent cameras though they don’t have as many available lenses and accessories that Canon and Nikon do.

For point and shoots I suggest you go down to a excellent camera store. Not Best Buy or anyplace like that but a real camera store. Tell them what you are looking for and they will show you cameras to meet your specs and show you how to use them. The Canon, Nikon, Fuji and Panasonic super zooms are pretty excellent. They are pretty expensive though. If you spend a small more you could get a DSLR. The second link has point and shoot cameras. Choose the quantity of zoom you want from the list on the side.

To Caitlin
Hi. I recently bought two cameras. A nikon d80 w/ 18-135mm
70-300mm and a 150-500mm with a 2x teleconverter and an olympus
sp-570 uz. As an ex professional photographer who stopped 27 being
ago with a nikon f, two hasselblads and an original sinar p 4×5 camera
i had alot of catching up and finally feel that this combination of
equiptment gives the most versatility for me. The olympus has 20x
zoom and i bought the 1.7 conversion lens. They have 24x zoom
but this is the only compact with a sparkle shoe, which is the main
reason i chose this over all others. It is excellent for off camera sparkle.
It,s 10 m pixels, video, panorama, live view, wide angle close-up
[ ie: excellent depth of field], time lap etc. and uses four AA batteries.
Ultra zoom compacts are excellent for candid shots and take any everywhere
camera without the fuss of lenses. I made test shots with both cameras and found very small difference in quality. The olympus
has a quicker lens f4.5 @ 560mm; the nikon w / sigma 150-500mm
is F6.3 @ 500mm. The only conundrum for you would be quick shutter
which is a conundrum only to be solved with a dslr. They have the quick
response shutters, and if you eliminate auto features [focusing, ISO,
exposure etc.] you can shoot even quicker. DSLR’s have memory
buffers that don’t clog up as quick especially if you shoot raw,
panorama mode, etc.. Don’t worry about too many mega pixels
10 is my recommended limit. You don,t need more than 20x zoom
after that camera shake is a pain and look for a featured mode called
quick shutter which causes the camera to continually focus and
pre capture which takes 10 fotos before pressing release.
Hope this was helpful Jim

Laptop man

I was somewhat surprised to see this guy leaning against a bicycle stand, propping up his laptop in the bright afternoon sunlight. What could he be doing here, on the east side of Broadway between 80th and 81st Street?

I suppose I could have questioned him, but he looked pretty all ears on what he was doing … so I looked around for an explanation. Aha, yes, there it was, right behind me: one of the many Starbucks coffeeshops in the neighborhood. Starbucks has a publicly-reachable Wifi network, which most people use at home (that’s the whole point, obviously: you go inside, buy yourself a ridiculously expensive latte, and then sit there and sip it while you surf the Web). But this guy had figured out that he could access the signal from outside, and was doubtless too cheap to go at home and pay for a cup of coffee.

I’m sad to report that his laptop was a Dell computer, rather than a classy Mac Powerbook that I would have preferred to see …

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will doubtless continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a unsystematic pool of "fascinating" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I naturally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.

I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an fascinating picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question go on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was fascinating. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a impeccably-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I’ve deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly make some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …

The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of fascinating people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so fascinating. They’re doubtless fine people, and they might even be more fascinating than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.

Check out this comparison page. Click on “In-depth review” and “Read Title-holder Opinions” for each camera. Be sure to note that the reviews are many pages long so you don’t stop after page one. Check the sample images, also. You can enlarge these to full size images if you click on the file name shown below the picture. You will have to then place your pointer in the white space to the right of the picture and click once. After that, you can pass your pointer over the image and it will turn into a magnifier. Click it as a magnifier once and the image will go to full size and you can really examine the detail or look for artifacts like purple fringing around items in high contrast photos or noise in darker areas of the picture.

Quoted from the Olympus review: “Ultimately though, after a lot of argument here, we chose that the SP-550UZ has just too many flaws everywhere it matters (image quality and routine) for a $ 500 camera, and that (though a close call) it fell small of a Recommended rating. As always we’d recommend having a excellent look at all the sample images before deciding if you agree.”

So, look at the sample images.

Have you thought of Canon A710 IS. It is 7 MP, Image stabilized, 6x optical zoom, uses only 2 AA batteries and has brilliant picture quality. Just a suggestion coz I just bought it after comparing it with Canon S3IS. It was a excellent choice for me and it is much compact than s3is. check this camera at

Canon has just announced Canon S5IS. Check that out too.
