Is the Insignia 720p Camcorder (Model: NS-DV720P) for $129 any good?

Is the Insignia 720p Camcorder (Model: NS-DV720P) for $129 any good?

I’ve actually seen them on sale frequently at Best Buy for $ 79.99!!… I was going to buy the Flip Video Ultra HD for $ 159 (on sale)… but wow: this Insignia is half that price!

Is it worth it? or is it a toy?

Insignia is best buys brand. They own all rights to sell their products. You get what you would expect for a non name brand electronic.

What do you think? Answer below!

i need to be able to take HD pics, but also HD video. I want to shoot maybe short films and add Digital effects to it later. Do SLRs that record video take a new picure for every frame, or are they interlaced? I saw one at target and it looks really cool, but I’m sure a lot of it was just the guy’s sales pitch. I think he said Nikon is really good. but of course he was talking about one that was like $ 800. lol anyways, should I just get an SLR that records HD vids and can take HD pics or should I get an HD camcorder and an HD SLR That doesn’t record video, or at least records it not in HD? I’m looking to spend around $ 300 – $ 400 for the camcorder. How much should I expect to pay for a Digital SLR that doesn’t have any fancy features other than HD pics?
@John – Thanks1 But I plan on using a tripod, and also using it as a steady cam. Also the SLR ones you can zoom manually. =)

For good movies you will be better off with a proper camcorder. Many digi cams (stills) do offer movie function but the actual camerawork part is mostly awkward, many cannot zoom during shot, and holding the camera at arms length is not the best way for a steady shot.

You asked a few questions so let me try to clarify some points and maybe then, you could come to a decision.

1. There are no HD pictures. I guess you mean pictures with high resolution. Any camera with sensors 10 MP and above will be good enough. (Some may even say 8 MP and I won’t disagree).

2. HD video mean 720p or 1080p (horizontal lines resolution). When a DSLR captures video, the processor inside the camera will convert the pictures and compressed it into a manageable format like .mov (quicktime). This will reduce the file size of the movie clip while retaining the resolution.

You have to decide what is your primary need. If it is to take still pictures and sometime some video clips, then get a DSLR camera with video function. If it is the other way around, i.e. you shoot a lot of video and take some still pictures sometime, then a Camcorder is the way to go. It is a tough call if it is 50:50.

You can check up on the prices of the entry models of the Nikon D3000 Canon EOS t1i (both without video) and those with video – Nikon D3100 , D5000 and EOS t2i.

If you are more interested with making videos, the best tool would be a digital video camera.
