dSLR. Is this a good buy: Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3?
I found this on Amazon. I’m not from US or Canada so I plot to have it shipped to my friend’s take up in Seattle. I’ll pay though credit card. Is it a excellent thought to buy online when I’m overseas? The same model here is twice the price. What’s the reasonable quantity to pay for the model above?
I’m also wary because I don’t know much about cameras. I’ve read here that some cameras for sale online are scams, meaning not fully or truthfully advertised. I want a standard kit, for a nice enough camera, beginner entry level. Is the model below excellent?

I’m still choosing between this or the Nikon D80. Is the D80 more expensive? It’s so confusing!!! Thanks in enhancement for fantastic tips. I really appreciate it. Who thought export cameras will be this tough . I just want to make sure I get the best one within my price range and for my needs.

Amazon is a excellent, legitimate site, I wouldn’t worry about ordering through them. The Canon you are looking at is the newer version of my 10mpx Rebel XTi, which I absolutely like. I upgraded to my Canon after practicing with a Pentax SLR film camera. The Nikon D80 is a very nice camera, and would be an awesome starter – the only reason I liked it less than the Canon is b/c I have small hands and the Nikon just seemed huge when I held it. The 18-55 lens is a excellent starter, 55mm is standard for general photography. In order to get fantastic pics, you’ll want to read up about f-stops, gap, shutter speed, and depth of field and really know how they work in order to fully know how to run your camera.
I reckon you’re looking at a pretty excellent deal on that Canon, and Amazon should be scam-free. I wouldn’t order from a unsystematic company or a house like ebay for a camera – that’s everywhere you’ll get had.
Canon and Nikon are both professional quality cameras – you’ll like whichever one you get!!

You still like the pixel count on sensors I see.
If you buy from Amazon, you do not need to worry about scams
The D80 should be a small more expensive .. it is a camera that has a few more so called “professional features” for a camera that ancient … the Canon XSi is the latest entry level DLSR … Nikon’s is the D60. The D80 is the ancient sub-$ 1000 DSLR which has been replaced by the D90. Always try to equate apples to apples when looking at cameras

How much a camera costs really doesn’t mean that much. For proof of that equate the Nikon D3 with the Canon 1Ds, Mark III ($ 3,000 difference, but the less expensive camera body out performs the high priced brand at high ISO’s, were it counts when shooting sports and news)

a) You can trust Amazon for the most part. I’ve shopped with them for being (books, music, camera equipment), haven’t had a conundrum.
Though you might want to check out the seller. In the case of the link you provided it’s J&R Music and Computer World.
Your other option might be ordering from Adorama or B&H Photo. Both are stores in NYC, it’s not an online service lonely, and both really earn the stars when it comes to shopping for cameras and equipment.
b) 700 bucks is a reasonable price to pay for the kit (camera body and lens).
c) It’s a very excellent walk around DSLR. The lens that comes with the kit is OK. So you might want to look into the body and a better lens (as I have). So far I’ve had a chance to play around with the Canon 28-135 (lens that comes with the Canon 40D wrap) and I liked it much more than the 18-55 that comes with the XSi kit.
d) I’ve shot with the Nikon D series, minus the D90. The camera I liked least was the D80. The D60 is a better camera, but that’s just one person’s opinion…..
…….Though I can’t wait to place my hands on the new D90.

I am attracted with export an entry-level Digital SLR camera. I bought the Canon Rebel XS but it does not have Liveview capability. My Internet research seems to indicate that the Sony a390 may be the best option I have. What is your opinion?
Thanks!
Answer by Jeroen Wijnands
My opinion is that liveview on a DSLR is rarely helpful and that sony still has a lot to learn about building a reliable dslr.
Answer by fhotoace
If I were export an entry level dSLR with Live View, I would buy the Nikon D3100
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25472/D3100.html
NOTE:
You do know that holding a two pound dSLR at arms length to compose a shot is just asking for blur due to camera movement, which gets worse as the focal length of the camera increases, right?
Live view has some specific uses:
* it can be used when by the video feature on a camera
* it can be used when the camera is mounted on a telescope or microscope
* it can be used when shooting product shots in a studio.
* it can be used when shooting macro shots in unusual camera positions.
The other major drawback to by Live View is the huge drain on the cameras battery and it can produce the cameras sensor to overheat after about eight minutes.
In the studio and when mounted on a telescope or microscope, we use an AC adapter to supply the power to the camera.

Your EOS Rebel XS is a impeccably fine dSLR with a impeccably fine viewfinder…which is what all dSLR photographers usually use to shoot with.
Live View is not a necessity…it’s a gimmick carried over from compact cameras. It does have it’s rare uses, but it’s not matter-of-fact for shooting with all the time and is not recommended to be used for prolonged periods.
And, you will most liable always need to mount it on a tripod to preclude image blur…because you could never handhold a dSLR steady enough at half arm’s length (not to mention, you would be laughed at if seen doing this).
My opinion…learn to like your viewfinder.
Answer by Cat Lover
I reckon you’d better read your instruction manual again. My daughter has the XS and she has live view on hers. She has never used it though, as the viewfinder is the way to go with a DSLR. So dig out your manual and read about your fine camera! No need to buy another one!
