How come all digital cameras use this system for storing photos?

How come all digital cameras use this system for storing photos?

How come all digital cameras use this system for storing photos?

Root directory: DCIM (and sometimes MISC)
Inside DCIM: 100xxxxx (Five letter word like NIKON, CANON, PENTX, CASIO….)

What is the “Misc” folder for?

What does “DCIM” stand for?

Why exactly five digits after “100″?

Who set this standard for all digital cameras?

Thanks for answering this dumb question!

Answer by OMG, I ♥ PONIES!!1
DCIM = Digital Camera IMages. This and everything else about the naming convention is a JEITA standard.
What’s that? Oh, JEITA = Japan Electronics and Information Technology industries Association.
For more, this Wiki article has a summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_rule_for_Camera_File_system and if you’re feeling particularly geeky now, they provide a link to the full JEITA specifications.

Expect for the DCIM folder, my cameras do not use that file naming system. Inside the DCIM folder, mine are labeled SANY1000 (for example).

This is a sliced DC 4 low-cost digital camera in a tabletop montage. Compositing of the PCB photography and the mounted case was performed with GIMP.

The camera is equipped with SQ908 microprocessor. I found the specifications and thought about soldering the CMOS and 128Mb DRAM to a AVR32 microcontroller, targetting a selfmade webcam ;-)

I am going to Spain this summer and don’t know if i want to take the risk of taking a digital camera. Everyone i talk says they have had things stolen from them such as their digital cameras. I might just buy a bunch of disposable cameras.

Answer by NoName13
digital produce much better and convenient, just be extremely careful tho.

Answer by Kate
bring lots of disposable ones because digital costs way too much

Answer by Halo
Take a digital one though, take the memory card out when not by it, so if the camera is stolen then you still have your pics on the card.

I’d bring a digital camera so I wouldn’t have to keep export more disposable cameras. Theft happens everywhere. Just be careful and be aware of your surroundings.
