Which is the best compact digital camera?
by SS&SS
I’m looking for a digital camera that is excellent quality, but also small enough to bring anywhere. Anyone know which might be the best for the money?
Answer by dcno02
ConsumerSearch has excellent articles telltale you what to look for.
Both of these sites have excellent reviews:

There are way too many of them (and I have not used a P&S for a while).
This website allows you to enter your requirement(s) and it will come up with what you need.

p.s. I did play with the Canon G9 (or was it.. S9?) and thought it was nicely made. I believe it’s been replaced by G10 by now.

There no such thing as a Best camera for everyone. The best camera is the camera that suits YOUR needs and desires. You should list addition details as to:
-Is this your first digital camera? How much photo taking experience do you have? How far will you possibly take it?
-Are you looking for a basic entry level point & shoot camera, a p&s with more advanced features, a camera that runs off AA batteries? One that easily fits in a shirt or pants pocket? or an advanced dSLR?
-What kind of pictures are you going to be taking? Indoor? Outdoor? Extremely Close up? Very distant or Moving objects? Portraits of large groups? Landscapes? Low Set alight?
-What are your aspirations? Are you looking to possibly take some photo classes and learn the ins-and-outs of taking fantastic photos? Or you just simply want to turn it on and get the best pic from the “Automatic” “Simple” mode?
-Will you be capturing video with your camera? How vital is this feature? Everywhere will you be enjoying or sharing these video clips? Youtube? PC? Email? Ipod? PSP? Mobile? Standard Definition TV? High Definition TV?
-And most importantly…whats your budget.
Of course, you dont have to answer each and each question, I just wanted to give you some suggestions of how you can help us help you to give answers that will best help you in choosing the camera thats right for you.

The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the SD1100 [IS] 7.1 with an added 2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for “Vivid” colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos under low set alight situation. It’s especially excellent for low-set alight concerts. The macro feature is superb for taking closeups of small butterflies, insects, etc. It now sells for $ 157 at fotoconnection.com:

To my knowledge the Canon SD1000 was never tested by Consumer Reports as the above answerer said.
Now the Canon SD1100 IS was tested and rated very high in Consumer Reports Dec ’08 issue. 8 megapixels, 3X optical zoom, has image stabilizer for shaky hands. Honestly quick “next shot delay”. The Canon SD1100 IS is a subcompact.

Sigma DP1

The Sigma DP1 is the first compact digital camera to come with a DSLR sized sensor. It’s not the best camera in the world in terms of general usability – it’s slow to focus, and if you shoot RAW there’s a long delay saving each shot. But the Foveon sensor produces stunning results which better either of the Canon DSLRs I owned before.

I am looking to buy a new digital camera and don’t know everywhere to start in looking for one. Preferably I would like something small and somewhat thin since I plot to carry it around a lot while traveling. I am also picky about the quality of pictures: excellent, clear pictures that aren’t grainy or discolored are essentially a must. Can anyone help??
Answer by ghostlyencountersva
When you buy a compact digital camera you want to look at it’s optical zoom and digital zoom capabilities. Optical zoom is actual zoom such as a microscope or telescope can zoom in and retain original image quality, digital on the other hand is computer software that inflates the pixels when you zoom in, which decreases the image quality and clearness. For example 2x optical zoom to 4x optical zoom provides 100 times better image quality when zoomed in on a certain object 10 times 10 for each difference, 2x digital zoom to 4x digital zoom just tells you how far the camera can zoom and estimate what an object “should” look like, but it’s usually terrible picture unless you are very close with digital. For scenery or football games, etc, optical zoom all the way, try to stay somewhere at 6x optical zoom or above.

Canon compact digital cameras are very highly rated for their picture quality. Not each camera is perfect, just pick the features you want. Search for “compact digital camera reviews” and you will get a bunch. Also, for you to know, the compact cameras take nice pics and are very convenient, but DSLR’s take far superior photos. It’s a trade-off, portability-picture quality.

A excellent compact digital camera would be a Sony Cybershot DSC-S950 10mp with 4x optical zoom technology and super steady shot image stabilization.
Another one is a Samsung SL30 10mp digital camera with 3x optical zoom and a 2.5in LCD.
Both cameras resolution produces fantastic images for large, photo quality prints, and price ranges from 100 bucks or more.
You can buy one from the site listed below. Goodluck!
