What are the suggested/recommended settings for filming with a canon vixia HF200 HD digital camcorder?
I recently bought the Canon Vixia HF200 digital camcorder. What can i do, as far as changing settings go, to optimize the quality and get the best out of my new camcorder… Also any tips such as low-set alight filming suggestions and stuff like that would be immensely helpful.
I will be importing to a mac computer by the way.
Thanks!

What lighting situation?
Is there quick action or no action?
Is there a specific mood you want to set?
There is no single ideal setting that meets all requirements…
Start with everything in automatic, then pick one item to go to manual and learn what that does.
For example, play with the shutter speed.
What is the default? What happens when you make the shutter speed quicker? Slower? When the video is imported, and you change the playback speed, what happened to the video that was captured with a quick shutter vs the default or slow shutter? What happens when you go the shutter speed over 1/500? 1/1000? quicker?
Telltale you takes all the fun out of you learning by doing.
When you reckon you have the manual sutter down, then try zoom, or focus, or gap/exposure. Play with the white balance by by different colors – and white under different lighting situation – at home outdoors, bright set alight, low set alight…
Congratulations on your new acquisition. Nice camcorder – too terrible it records to AVCHD – otherwise, very nice. You will have lots of fun with it.

I just got the HF200 a month ago and owned the HF10 before. It’s just like the other guy said. It depends on many factors like lighting condition and type of action and many more.
As far as shooting in low set alight condition with the HF200, unless you’re on Cinemode, you’ll notice a excellent quantity of noise. But, anyways, for starters, just make sure you’re on auto and choose the MXP setting, which is the highest quality avail. (24 Mb/s)
Later on, you might want to explore the manual focus option.

Here is a CVS digital Camcorder I customised next to one I just got from the store. Sort of a before & after. It is very simple to dis-essemble & paint. Be sure & checkout this site on how to hack it. Here is a blog entry about it.
Im trying to take clips from my Canon NTSC ZP 65 MC Digital camcorder and place them on my computer I have the right plug and a USB 2.0 port when I go into windows movie makor or sony vegas and click on the option to import video from a device it says my camcorder is not there

I don’t know anything about a ZP 65 MC – did you mean the ZR65MC? If so, it’s a MiniDV camcorder – you’ll need to capture the video via firewire rather than USB. If your PC hasn’t already got one you’ll need to bed in a firewire card. They’re cheap, simple to bed in and readily available. You’ll also need a firewire cable.
