Q&A: I want a digital camera...but what should i get? Do Optical Camera's take better quality pictures?

I LOVE taking pictures, but I don’t have a digital camera YET. I have been using this film camera I bought about 2 years ago for about 150 bucks. The zoom is insane and the pictues it takes, is better than alot of digital cameras I’ve seen. I’m getting tired of developing film and not having enough film to take pictures. Not to mention that I can’t see what I’ve taken until I get the film developed. In a way it’s cool cause you can’t wait to see how your pictures came out. But c’mon, it’s time for a digital camera with alot of memory. Thing is, I want a camera that is thin and sleek, that records video, and takes pictures so clear, you thought a professional took it. I’ve been a fan of Sony for a long time and I’m looking at those. But what kind of DIGITAL camera will be able to compare, or beat my film camera? Are old school film cameras better? Or can I find a digital one like it. With mine, it can be PITCH black and the picture is sill CRYSTAL CLEAR. I don’t want to make a bad choic

if you spend the $ $ you can get a good digital camera like a canon rebel.

I prefer an optical zoom to a digital zoom because an optical zoom adjusts the image by cropping it an expanding it (which affects resolution). An optical zoom, because the lens moves, should get a better finished product.

Go to Consumer Reports website and check out digital cameras.

I’ve owned a few Canon PowerShot cameras (A60, A70, A80 point and shoot) and had good results.

ok i am just noticing that i really need to actually pause for a minute, and really clean this desk off, badly!!! LOL

I’ve been wanting a camera for a while now and I’ve been researching about different brands. I’ve researched about the Sony DSC-W120 for a while, but not sure if I want to buy it. Some people say that it’s an OK camera and the picture Quality is not the best. Though, I really like the shiny, professional design.

Can you please help me by recommending a digital camera that is both under 200 dollars (maybe in the $ 150-$ 170 zone) and has very good quality on video and pictures?
For more details on what I want on a digital camera is a sleek design. I don’t really like those bulky cameras that need bags. A nice slim, easy to go camera would be nice… Thanks!
Hmm…I’m looking over the suggestions and found one that looks really cool! The Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera. Now I’m deciding to get the Canon SD1100IS or Sony w120. Please help!

I recommend Canon and Sony Cameras. You can have a look at the
Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue)..It is about $ 163.

You can’t go wrong with a Canon A590IS is the form factor suits you. Also good by Canon is the 1100IS, and the new Powershot A1000IS.
Cameras noted for good video with still above avg photos:
Casio Exilim EX-Z80, EX-Z1080
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5
Kodak (yes, Kodak) V1073 w/3″ Touchscreen and 720HD video recording

If you buy online, I suggest to check Amazon.com (use “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.” option when you can) for some of the best prices around.
Good Luck!

The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the SD1100 [IS] 7.1 with an added 2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for “Vivid” colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos under low light conditions. It’s especially good for low-light concerts. The macro feature is superb for taking closeups of small butterflies, insects, etc. It currently sells for $ 140 at techgearnow.com:
