tripod. exposure of about 5 seconds. I used a compact digital camera as a light meter to help me calculate the best exposure to use.

I´m a professional photojournalist working in a huge wire agency, I have the best cameras and lenses (Nikon D3, everything f2.8, supplied by the agency of course!), but I need a small compact camera with manual controls (at least some) and brilliant HI ISO resolution, for making a very hard tale about software piracy in a south american country. PLEASE help me with some advice, I´m leaving in a couple of weeks and I know NOTHING about compact cameras. Is there a favorite compact among professional photographers??
Thanks a lot, you´ll save my tale!!

FIRST THINGS FIRST… YOU CONTROL THEFT BY NOT BEING AN OBVIOUS TARGET. Remember that above all things and… “don’t wear jewels around your neck” – I reckon you know where I’m going with that.

My Sister is also a published photographer ( http://sharedvisions.us/ ) and recently bought a compact camera which rivals it’s Leica counterpart.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0607/06071904panasoniclx2.asp). Rather than give you all the advantages (including price) over it’s Lumix counterpart, it also has the same lens,… a LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT and panoramic capabilities.

You might find the record also useful in your gathering of tale material.

I can go on about it and have seen the output (VERY impressive) that she has shared with me and I can comfortably assure you that you can do all the research you want (she did before buying it) and you will come to the same conclusion that she did.

It won’t fit in a shirt pocket but will easily fit in your load pants (see?… even I know something about photography in third world environments).
;-) Delight in your trip… it’s gorgeous in many places down there… try to make some community contacts before you go… they may be allies you will need.

If I was covertly covering something like that, I would use a camera phone where needed and cover anything else with a Leica. I don’t know who you work for, but my instructions have pretty much always amounted to “Get the picture!.”

As far as a compact P&S camera goes, look into the Canons. I am not particularly fond of P&S cameras because the are not as easily used as any a DSLR or Range Finder with a 35 mm lens. I can set everything on any of them pretty much by feel, glance at the range extent if I need to (pre focus) take my shots and pretty much not look like I am shooting.

With P&S cameras, you have to work your way through menus ( maybe several layers of menus – not very stealthy) and God may have an thought of where they are really focused, but you won’t. I have always had excellent fortune pretty much by asking to be able to take pictures even when the activities are highly illegal as long as everyone was assured that there weren’t any identifying shots. It’s incredible how accomodating and even downright helpful public can be.

I like Namedeleted’s suggestion. The Leica D-Lux 4 is also available without the red dot (& cheaper) as the Panasonic LX3. With previous models, Panasonic/ Leica sister models produced identical RAW images but the Leica version had better firmware when you shot in jpg.

If you can find decent image samples, compare them to the discontinued Fuji F30. I thought this was still the king of high-ISO point & shoots. Here’s the Fuji at ISO 800: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilmf30/page14.asp (The dial on this camera also goes to 3200.)

Photographer’s Guide to the Leica D-Lux 4: Getting the Most from Leica’s Compact Digital Camera

The Leica D-Lux 4 is one of the most capable and versatile digital cameras of all the “point-and-shoot” models currently available. But, its profusion of menus and controls and its ability to perform so many photographic functions, coupled with a user’s manual that can be hard to work out, have led to frustration for some photographers in learning how to use the camera to its full the makings. Photographer’s Guide to the Leica D-Lux 4 is the first guidebook that clarifies the features and capab
