Just make sure you search different ways, such as by brand, by specific camera, or just digital cameras. Real public enter real reviews.

They’ve got fantastic reviews for just about every digital camera made.

www.dpreview.com — They have very detailed information on nearly every make of camera you can reckon of. You can search for models based on innumerable criteria and do side-by-side comparisons on 2-3 cameras that you may be interested in. It is a GREAT resource!

What do you reckon? Answer below!

I’m checking out these cameras to buy. Consumer Reports had the A710 highly rated but it’s an ‘older’ model. What I’m wondering is why it’s listed in Amazon at 399 and the A720 around 199….. What features does the A710 have that warrant the price increase.

And, any suggestions for point-and-shoot digital cameras additional than these ones in the price range?

Answer by JBT
Ignore the Amazon price for the older A710. I’ve seen Amazon with some higher prices on older, discontinued cameras, including some prices that were so high they were outrageous. I’m unsure of why this is.

You’re right that the A720 IS, announced August 2007, replaces the A710 IS, announced September 2006.

If you aren’t plotting to shoot a lot of low light photos, the A720 will do very well for you. In low light the A720 is servicable, though not stellar. For most public’s use, this is a fantastic small camera.

I reckon you have to question your self if you want to pay the price for a excellent SLR camera, or you want OT go with another camera. The high end cameras are excellent but it all depends on what your doing with it.

Sometimes when items get replaced the price on the ancient model goes way down. Then, after the new item has been out a while, the older model starts getting sold out, the the price goes up.

The Amazon price is beyond doubt incorrect. You can buy the A710 IS plus a Selphy printer package for $ 199 at Circuit city.

Anyway, both cameras are basically identical…the A720 IS is just the update to the A710 IS.
It features List’s latest Digic III processor (A710 IS, Digic II) plus it has an extra megapixel…it would be the one to get.

These cameras ARE point and shoot, but also benefit from full manual controls, charitable you more creative control if you wish.

For cost effectiveness I would advise you to buy rechargeable NiMH batteries (2500-2700mAh) plus a charger. You will get up to 400 shots per charge. It’s a excellent thought to buy a 4 battery charger and 4 batteries. That way you always have a spare set. These batteries will drain when not used, so make sure you give them a charge before you need to use the camera (especially if you haven’t used it in so ;me time).
Never use ordinary alkaline batteries (that includes heavy duty, extra heavy duty etc).

You will also need to buy an SD memory card. HIgh speed recommended (Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III…1-2GB).
Don’t forget to format the card in the camera before first use…AND everytime AFTER you have safely uploaded all images to your computer. This deletes all files from the card and will prevent card errors.

please read the user manuals, thoroughly.

excellent luck…
