Q&A: HD Camera External Hard Drive Question?

Q&A: HD Camera External Hard Drive Question?

Okay for my Panasonic HD Camera I use an External Hard Drive that mounts on top instead of a P2 Card. I know P2 is better, but as of now Hard Drive is my only option. Okay so when I import clips straight from the Hard Drive to my Macbook, it comes up as a .mxf file. Okay not sure if .mxf is compatible with iMovie. I know that Final Cut Pro/Express can convert the file, but is there anyway I can convert it (Preferably .mov) so that the file may work in iMovie, or any other video editing program for that matter? Thanks!

Your P2 equipped Panny records to DVCPRO or DVCPRO HD video format (AG-HVX200?). iMovie cannot deal with this file format. As you already know Final Cut Pro can.

There are a few converters (form MXF to MOV or MP4)… I am fairly certain they all cost – but you can check.

Check out Sony Vegas Studio Platinum version if you are working on a PC. This and a few other programs can handle HDV type footage, while others can’t. Search for HDV editing on the web. If Sony Vegas Studio Platinum can handle your camera’s output, it is really reasonably priced. Watch for rebates when new versions come out! Make sure you are looking at the Vegas Studio Platinum version. Vegas Pro is quite a lot pricier! I think Vegas Platinum will work with your budget. Here’s wishing you good editing!

HD Video sample from Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ35 mounted to the windshield using Panavise 809 Suction Car Mount. Panavise 809 is stable and with the extension sent directly from Panavise (not available at purchase from Amazon), the fairly bulky digital camera can be mounted straight up (not upside down). Panasonic Lumix FZ35 is great for HD video recording with 18x optical zoom and great image stabilization. The video was recorded in AVCHD low quality (other settings are high and super high) and subsequently converted to MP4 H264 format prior to uploading.
