Hi Zach,
Nikon Cameras are a fantastic choice for your price range. If you aren’t looking to spend too much, you can buy refurbished–fantastic quality at a lower price. If you’re interested, you can check out our site: http://www.photo4less.com. You can chop digital cameras and additional photography gear–maybe you’ll find something you can use.

You should go with List G12 10MP Digital Camera
* 10.0-megapixel sensor and the DIGIC 4 Image Processor combine to make List’s HS SYSTEM for improved low light performance
*Shoot 720p HD record in stereo sound; HDMI output
*List’s Hybrid IS compensates for angular and shift camera shake during close-up shooting
*5x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer; 28mm wide-angle lens; optical viewfinder
*Capture images and record to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, HC MMC Plus Card (not built-in)

list

I have the list sx10
It is 10.1 megapixel
20x optical zoom
Conundrum is that it is bulky.
I like the camera and have taken some fantastic pictures with it. The zoom is fantastic and I may maybe take close ups of peoples faces from over 100 yards away.
Awesome camera

it depends what matters to you and how much you’re willing to spend. if you want professional-standard photos, then go for the Nikon D90. but, this is expensive, and life a DSLR it will take some getting used to. if it’s a compact camera you’re after, then pretty much all of them these days have a movie mode.
List and Nikon are excellent for image quality… for you though, i suggest the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. it has a 10x zoom, which will get you very close to whatever your photographing, it takes pretty excellent photos with a decent Leica lens, and films HD (high definition (VERY excellent quality)) movies too. it’s pretty small too.
it also has O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilization), because with a 10x zoom, hand shake from holding the camera will blur and ruin most of your photos without it. you can pick one up for about $ 400-450.
you may maybe also get a Join camera, which looks like a DSLR but has a built in lens. they usually have a huge zoom range, and will most often shoot movies. the conundrum with these is that they are usually reasonably heavy and some can be really expensive too.
excellent luck.

All of the major brands are excellent. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to reckon about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, result a reliable place to hold it, and the list goes on and on and on…….
The first business to realize is that nearly any digital camera will take excellent pictures. If more public would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it may maybe be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.
I really judge buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can choose on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Excellent Luck
