I just got a refurbished Nikon d40x camera, should I purchase extra warranty?

I just got a refurbished Nikon d40x camera, it only came with a 90 day manufacturers warranty, and the seller offers a extended 1 yr warranty for 56 bucks. Should I hold extra warranty? How often do these camera break?

Answer by rs
They don’t break often and the warranty usually only covers defects in materials and workmanship, not user inflicted hurt. The greatest chance of defect related stoppage comes within the first few hours of use. If you don’t buy the warranty, I strongly suggest you use it like crazy in the first month or two and test out EVERY feature to make sure it works perfectly. I would never buy an extended warranty unless it covered unpremeditated hurt, but if it gives you peace of mind, get it.

I wouldn’t. I would save the money and look for additional lenses and additional accessories. Cameras don’t often break, these are the high end harvest for these companies. Since the D40 has been discontinued, you may want to start reduction for your next camera in a few years. Save a small here and there and it starts to add up over time.

I’d look in or post a “wanted” ad in your community Craigslist. With all the new models coming out, public are always upgrading and selling off their older cameras. The fantastic business about Craigslist is that you can really meet the seller and try out the camera before paying for it. That’s something you can’t do with Ebay. I’ve bought several cameras and lenses from
Craigslist and have been really satisfied with the results.

I don’t know where you live, but check out these Craigslist postings for a Nikon D40x.

Another alternative, if you don’t want to pay $ 400-800 for a camera is the D40. It’s a fantastic camera that lists for about $ 150 less.

$ 629, but may maybe hit under $ 600 once the D60 arrives. The D40x is discontinued, so supplies are limited to an extent.

Ebay, and someone mentioned Craigslist. Factory refurb. may maybe also work, or a body-only option.
