What setting should I use to take indoor pictures on a Nikon D40x?

Answer by Hondo
The manual setting.

have you done any experimenting? You should – that’s how you’ll learn best. We learn by doing not by listening to the advice of others.

Also it depends on what you want to do. Flash? I have settings I use. Manual: 1/200, f/5.6. This works quite well for me.

No flash, you’ll need either another lens such as a fast 50mm or a tripod and time exposure.

I still advise experimenting and perhaps reading and / or a class.

Manual.

Answer by Dr. Iblis
you should be on manual, or at least some kind of shutter/aperture priority setting.

that is the whole point of the camera

when I do some stuff, I go completely manual, focus and everything

I am new to sports photography, and was looking at a UV filter, but was wondering what other filters should i seriously consider? Im not just doing sports photography too tho, as well as scenic photos and such, but was wondering what Filters are highly recommended?

I have a Nikon D40X if that matters. (also, are the size of the filters determined by the diameter of the lens?)

“are the size of the filters determined by the diameter of the lens?”

Yes

I think the main filters to have are a UV filter to protect your lens and a polarizer to reduce glare and to here saturate colors.

B+W is a superb brand of filters but does cost more, if you want a good brand filter at a lower price then check out the Tiffen brand.

Below I listed a few good photo vendors to check out.

Good luck.

Actually NONE, Digital SLR’s already have inbuild UV filtering and the likes.

But a Polarisation filter is worth a try, it can help you to filter out a troublesome bit of light that comes in from a bad corner.

Except that most cheap lenses do have the front of the lens move as it focusses ;(

You can add a simple UV filter to for a simple reason, if something happens and hits your lens..it is the cheap filter that breaks not the actual lens.

Remember though that cheap UV filters can have bad coating that causes even more flares [from the light that has been shot out of the lens again from the lens coating]. Best is to invest in a decent B+W filter.
