What do all the numbers mean on SLR cameras?Which is the best one?
I am looking to buy a List SLR digital camera and I know megapixels but dont know the additional numbers like the 18-55mm or whatever. What should I be looking for? Larger numbers?
Answer by Michael
The numbers you are talking about are referring to the lens. 18-55 mm is what comes standard with some list cameras but you may want to spend a small more on a higher quality lens.

When you have numbers like that, it is talking about the Zoom on the lens itself. On an 18-55mm, it is talking about the length from the last lens element (Piece of glass) to your sensor (The business behind the mirror). When you have a small number, it earnings you can get a wider field of view because the lens element is quicker to the sensor. For higher numbers, it earnings you can zoom in more. It is up to you on what you would like, but if you don’t really know what the numbers mean right now, this lens will still be perfect for you.

“18-55mm” refers to the focal length of the lens. Each lens is different. By looking at the focal length of each lens, you can tell whether the lens is wide-angle, or telephoto.
The smaller the number, the wider the angle. The larger the number, the narrower the angle (or the more ‘zoomed in’).
The 18-55mm will give you decent wide-angle and mediocre telephoto. If you want to shoot subjects such as flora and fauna and sports, consider investing in an another lens such as the List 55-250mm.
