blue sony cybershot professional enough for modeling photo shoots?
by hjjanisch
i just got into photography and made a photographer model mayhem page and got approved for the work i put up. however, being a freshman college student with no job and no cash on me right now, i can’t afford the Nikon i desire. still, several models want me to shoot for them, but in your opinion do you think it bizarre to show up, as a photographer, to a photo shoot for a model i have never met before with my blue sony cybershot? i know my work looks professional, but i’m afraid to be scoffed at by showing up with it. i also wonder if i should not mention what kind of camera i use on my page’s profile.

Showing up with that camera would be like showing up to the Indy 500 with a Toyota Yaris. Not to mention that you simply do not have the control needed to do real quality professional work with a point and shoot camera. Sorry, but you are seriously misrepresenting yourself and cheating any potential clients. That is no way to get started in the field.
And by the way, the various modeling sites are all too happy to “accept” your photos as long as you pay their fee.
Just hold off on things a while until you can get the proper equipment and do this correctly. You will be hurting yourself, your clients, and your reputation otherwise.

Have to concur with Steve on all fronts but one.
Model Mayhem is very fussy with who they allow so it’s a bit surprising they let your work in. Most work from a point and shoot is far from professional in how it looks unless an actual pro is operating the camera. My boyfriend is a great photographer and they rejected him. Personally I just think the shots he submitted weren’t his best but he wasn’t listening to me.
Steve, just for the record, MM starts free but you can pay to do more on the site. Mine is free because 1. I’m broke and 2. I’m cheap as it is.
To the asker: Do yourself a favor and save for the Nikon. You’re not doing anyone any favors shooting on a P & S. And frankly, I’m quite curious to see your MM page. Perhaps instead of inflating your ego you should allow the public here to decide if it looks professional. Are you brave enough? Or are you going to talk the talk but not walk the walk?
