a miniDV vcam must be FIREWIRE**-connected to pc to upload video thru video capture or video editing (VES)* software while vcam is on playback. Note: DV or Firewire port of vcam is 4pin. Before cable purchase ** (Vcam/4pin->CABLE->PC (4/ 6pin?), check the firewire port of PC whether 4 or 6 pin. If none, procure firewire card: pci for pc or pcmia for laptop (Google).

2. Edit- drag/drop media files->timeline & enhance w/effects, transition, music & titles
3. Publish (render)- save Movie file, also save Project* ** file
4. Share-burn to DvD – open Windows DvD maker

I have heard that Vista may have a compatibility conundrum with firewire. You might be able to download the software at the sony website. You can also use Windows Movie Maker, but first you need a firewire tie.
If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire tie (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC doubtless did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and bed in it, since most computers (except possibly groundbreaking new) don’t come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to buy a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.

Most camcorders now come with Firewire, which is the fastest tie.

I reckon you should hook up your camcorder to the computer and allow it to auto-detect it. Once detected, it will pull in all the necessary files to use it properly. If not, then you will need to search the Internet for the proper files to use the camcorder. Some camcorders will come with a DVD-ROM or a CD-ROM with the driver files and accompanying software.

a miniDV vcam (also, Digi-8) must be DV~Firewire400 ~IEEE1394* cable-connected to a pc or mac to upload video thru video editing** or capture application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK. Most (digital) tape vcams have 4-pin DV ports; BUT before cable* purchase, check computer for DV port {VCAM@4-pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@ 4pin? or 6pin?}. If none, bed in firewire card: pci for desktop or pcmcia / express for laptop.
