for the money, this is an brilliant camera. If you are ordering by mail, I seriously suggest Calumet Camera….they have always done right by me, prices are lower than most, but they don’t advertise. If you have a Calumet in your area, go in, handle, talk to them and get feed back from pros. My only critique of this camera is that the zoom is TOO fantastic! It is very hard to set a zoom with that much range to exactly everywhere you want it. But that is a minor issue. I am by the G-10 Canon, and it’s range is huge, far more than I would really want..wish it had less range and more precise settings as for lens lenght (zoom ability)…the G10 has the widest angle of the point and shoots, yet too much zoom, for the zoom moves very quickly when setting, if you know what I mean.

I’ve had my SX10 for about a week and am very impressed with it’s versatility. I tend to read all the user reviews I can before making a buy and did that with the SX10. I also tested the camera with my own card in a local store and compared video and stills on the same card to the Pany TZ28. I am very attracted in video and was attracted to the Pany because of its HD video. Though, in testing, the SX10 was overall very superior. It has brilliant color, unbelievable IS, smooth zoom, very nice stereo signal, and fool proof autofocus. I found the Pany to be weak in all those areas. I prefer the better “all around” video to the HD of the Pany.

Initially, I was spooked by the reports of a slow lens during medium to max zoom, 5.6 to be exact. I read enough reports to be convinced that the slow lens would not be especially restrictive for me due to compensation in ISO and speed setting, made possible by the brilliant image stabilization. I have found the lens to be just fine, even at max zoom. I also found that the lens is quick enough for indoor non sparkle photography. I even tested the “ISO 3200″ setting, which requires a lower mp setting. I printed these out at 3×5 and the pictures were very excellent.

At first, the LCD seemed dark. After I turned up the setting to bright, it was better. After by it awhile, it seems fine. The EVF is large and bright, the best I’ve seen.

When the professional reviews come out, there will certainly be knocks on the slow lens. In my opinion, this is more of a hypothetical limitation than a matter-of-fact one. If you like the camera, don’t be spooked by the slow lens comments. If you’re not sure, buy from Amazon with their brilliant return policy.

One really solid feature is the wide angle of the lens. This was not a feature I thought I wanted or needed. Now that I’ve seen the wide angle, I’ll never have another camera without it.

There are many other features that most will delight in, including the dedicated video button, AA batteries, custom settings etc. I reckon average and very serious photographers alike will be pleased with the SX10.

Minor lens distortions and color fringing at either end of zoom
Tedious control dial
LCD hard to see in bright outdoor set alight
Zoom sounds audible in movies

I recently bought that camera, and it’s by far the best digital camera I’ve ever bought. The zoom is spectacular, but the closer you zoom, the more trying it becomes to not get a blurry photo (unless you have a tripod). I have shaky hands and the image stabilized zoom helps, but it only helps so much. If I get to about 15x zoom (for me,), the pictures seem to be a bit blurry. It’s an brilliant camera for the price.
I bought mine at Best Buy. You can also buy it off their website and amazon.
