What digital SLR camera would you suggest?
I currently have a Sony Cybershot (older model). It was my FIRST digital camera ever, and now that I am more intuned with photography I want to pursue it more seriously.
I’m looking for an SLR camera with a wide range of abilities, different lense options and filters. Record capability isnt necessary, but I want to have the ability to take high quality photos, with different shutter speeds etc, etc.
All of this for a reasonable price…as it won’t be the only camera I’m looking into purchasing.

Sony A850 would be a excellent step up.
I don’t reckon any of the Sony dSLR cameras offer a record mode.

I reckon you should go to a store that sells cameras and have them on show. This way you can hold them and play around with them and find one that is fit for you. This is something you should pick on your own. You can go with the more well loved camera like Nikon or List. List and Nikon have more options for lenses. All of the digital SLR’s have plenty of shutter speed options. You don’t have to buy the brand of filter to match your camera any brand will work. The one filter I suggest is a UV filter to help keep your lens (which is more expensive) from getting scratched or cracked.
If you are excellent at taking pictures the type of camera you buy wont matter.
Any of the beginning amateur cameras are going to do the just about the same business. Having someone tell you what camera you should buy isn’t going to make you a better photographer. This is a huge step in your career then you need to do the research yourself. You learn more when you do it yourself then having someone say buy this camera.

My newest baby is the Olympus E-420. Olympus may not be a List or a Nikon or a Sony, but it’s a fantastic camera for a reasonable price. I got the body, a 14-42mm lens, and a macro lens, all for under $ 600. I’m toying with the thought of getting a telephoto lens soon. Right now is a pretty sweet time to buy DSLRs because of the price war going on between Walmart and Amazon. Hunt around for deals, and I’m sure you’ll find some.

I want to buy a Digital 35MM – what is your opinion? I was looking at the Sony Alpha DSLR and I really like it – what does everyone else reckon?
Answer by Elvis
All of the major brands are excellent. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to reckon about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, result a reliable place to hold it, and the list goes on and on and on…….
The first business to realize is that nearly any digital camera will take excellent pictures. If more public would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it may maybe be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.
I really judge buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can choose on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.

First, there is no such business as a 35mm digital camera. 35mm is a film camera.
The Sony is really a Minolta DSLR since Sony bought the rights when Minolta quit the camera business. Every Minolta Auto Focus lens made since 1985 will mount to the Sony Alpha so you have access to a lot of high quality glass. Plus, you can buy an adapter to use the older Minolta MC/MD ROKKOR-X lenses as manual focus.
IMO the Sony is an brilliant choice, especially since you express a liking for it. If you have any Minolta questions just email me.

I have the Alpha and it is a fantastic camera. It is far more comfortable than the list xti and the inbody stablization works very well. The only complaint I have is the ISO 1600 is unusable, I have used up to 800 with no problems though. Minolta lenses are very cheap and simple to find on Ebay also. I reckon you will be very pleased with it!
