Need a good web site for comparing point&shoot digital cameras? Do U have a camera that you like or recommend?

Need a good web site for comparing point&shoot digital cameras? Do U have a camera that you like or recommend?

I currently have a 2.0 megapixel Kodak… It’s about 3 years old and I am getting really annoyed with the EasyShare software (for a variety of reasons). I don’t think I need more than 7 megapixels, but I would like a pretty good optical zoom.

(Yes, I know you can zoom digitally, especially with more pixels, but I have my own preferences.)

ANY info you would like to share would be appreciated!

Definitely check out Consumer Reports, they review cameras fairly often and are very thorough.

July’s issue of Consumer Reports should be on newsstands now or check it out at local library. July’s issue is digital cameras. There’s always Website dpreview.com where people give reviews of their camera including what they don’t like about it.
For zoom, I recommend my camera. Sony CyberShot DSC-H2. 12X optical zoom, 6 megapixels, will give you an excellent 8X10, has image stabilizer, very good on AA rechargeable battery life, only 1 second delay between shots, and comes with battery charger. Has manual controls, or just leave on auto. Should run about $ 280 today; I paid more back in Nov.

I like this website http:www.dcresource.com

I have a Canon Powershot SD800 IS, and I LOVE it.
It has 7MP (which more than enough), it has a wide-angle lens, 3.8x optical zoom, and Image Stabilization.
I bought it at Best Buy for $ 399.

Another option is the Canon TX1, which has 10x optical zoom, 7MP, Image Stabilization and can record HD video.
It’s about $ 500.

Another option would be the Canon S3 IS or S5 IS.
The main difference between the two are megapixels and screen size. The S3 has 12x optical zoom, a 2.0” screen and 6MP, and the S5 has 12x optical zoom, a 2.5” screen and 8MP. They both are really good cameras though.

good luck

OK- time for a new digicam. There are many terrific cameras out there, and some lame ones (even from respected brands). For instance- I wouldn’t buy a Nikon P5000. It’s got a good zoom and excellent image quality, but its auto-focus speed is so slow, it will drive you nuts.

My favorite review site is www.dpreview.com. it provides the most thorough reviews, but the least number of them. They only review particularly interesting cameras.

Also check out:
www.imaging-resource.com/
www.steves-digicams.com/
and
www.dcresource.com/

They each have their own style of reviewing.

I wouldn’t trust the previously mentioned Consumer Reports or Yahoo reviews. It’s just not their specialty. The aforementioned guys live and breathe digicams.

You’re right- you don’t need more than 7 Mpix. And there are plenty of terrific new cameras with bigger zooms. If you want to keep the size small, consider the Panasonic TZ3. It has a 10x zoom which goes from 28-280mm. That’s a lot *wider* than most start at, and it really makes a difference. But, if you’re a bird watcher- you might like the Olympus SP550UZ as it has a class leading 18x zoom (wow) and some pretty nice features. You do give up a bit of image quality to get that much zoom though. (such is life)

digital cameras compare

Today I went and shot a picture I had taken previously with my old Nikon FE film camera. I wanted to see how much a difference there was between digital and film. The result? Not that much really, but just enough to make me prefer the film shot more. The film camera because of its age creates this effect where the corners of the picture darkens up. This creates a more moody picture compared to the perfect digital shot which results in a better picture. Click here to see the film version of this picture.

Dslr’s are a lot more expensive but is there a lot to benifit compared to cheaper and smaller digital cameras?

The sensor in a DSLR like the Sony A300 or Canon XSi or Nikon D60 is as much as 15 times larger than the sensor in a “point & shoot” digicam. A 6 megapixel DSLR will simply blow away a digicam in terms of image quality.

A DSLR offers you the luxury of interchangeable lenses. You aren’t limited to a slow permanently attached lens which often limits your creative abilities. You also have more control over f-stops and shutter speeds with a DSLR.

A DSLR has barely perceptible shutter lag so you never miss that important action shot. All digicams suffer from shutter lag – that frustrating time between when you press the shutter release and the camera actually takes the picture.

With a DSLR you are looking directly through the lens. You see exactly what the lens sees.

Listen to what the first poster said.

However, I’d like to add:

If you’re having to ask what the advantages of an SLR are then for you there probably are none. Just because SLRs are a “better” camera doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Unless you know what you’re doing you’ll probably find all of the different settings on an SLR very confusing and it’ll just frustrate you.
