What is in your opinion the best digital camera?
I need a new camera. Not a professional one, and not a too expensive one. It should be about 200 – 300$ . I have a Kodak M863, just to make a statement, the photos are redish, and they’re not apparent at all. What’s in your opinion the best digital camera?
Answer by Kurt
The m863 should do better. There may be settings to be changed to make the pictures turn out better. White balance and picture quality might be set pun. I don’t reckon you get compression options on that model. Kodak is usually reasonably excellent. List and Nikon are brilliant and have some nice cameras available in that range. Best is too narrow a word, though. A huge full featured camera is preferable to me, but not convenient for carrying around. You have to consider media format and power cell format, also if you are going to be out and away from your computer and charger for a while.

At least 10 – 30 times a day someone on YA questions: “Which one is a excellent camera to buy?”
A quick search would have agreed you hundreds of instant answers (without having to wait for answers), but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:
I don’t like to give recommendations for particular cameras because there are too many choices and too many variables in what public are looking for. I find it much more useful to help you reckon this over, then make up your own mind.
Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully clever because of their small size.
When light situation are ideal, they even take really nice photos – all of them do.
But, they all DO have limitations – they don’t do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The small onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn’t reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can’t compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun “tricks” and special effects.
P&S’s also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.
If you’re ok with all persons limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick any a List or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.
A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of persons even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a huge difference to your flash photos).
Don’t worry too much about megapixels – all modern cameras have plenty enough, plus there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you really LOSE quality rather than gain it. 6 megapixels is about the high limit for persons small sensors.
Don’t worry about digital zoom, in fact, don’t EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.
Some public question for a camera that “doesn’t take blurry photos”. Blur is the photographer’s conundrum, NOT the camera’s. Even the most expensive camera will take blurry photos if the person behind it doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Some words about special effect features such as color accent, or even just b/w or sepia:
About applying any sort of effect in camera: DON’T DO IT !
Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took – surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?
Always set your camera to largest size, best quality (and to color).
That way, you start with the best possible photo as your first.
Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart’s content.
You have much better control over any control on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your first.
Choose which features are vital to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .
The very best business you can do for your success is to use some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much larger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.
For what it’s worth – if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a List Powershot SX20 IS http://www.usa.list.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208
P.S. as much as I dislike Kodak cameras, “reddish and not apparent at all” is most likely your fault, not the cameras. Get some books on photography and do some learning, you’ll like what that does for your results.

Another image from last night’s thought. I don’t smoke, but I’ve been wanting to do this picture for years (since the first time I saw FLCL).
I’m looking to buy a new digital camera, I previously owned a Sony, but I really didn’t like the way it worked. So I’m looking to buy a new one, maybe a List or Kodak? My price range is anywhere between 200-300$ , and I want to buy the best I can for my money.

I’d recommend List SD790 IS. It is a 10 megapixel camera with 3x zoom and image stabilization.

For the price it’s a no brainer. List A590 IS. 4X optical zoom, 8 megapixels, image stabilizer, aperture/shutter priority, quicker than most point & shoots at “next shot delay”. $ 95-+ shipping on line at Amazon.com
If you paid $ 125 in store you are not overpaying for what you get.

If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html
It just came out on November 4, 2008.
It’s an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality record [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] “Leica” lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a “burst speed” of 13 fps; and sells new for $ 315 at amazon.com.
Here’s an actual handheld picture of the moon:
