How do i take pictures with blurry backgrounds on nikon d90?

i use nikon D90 with the kit lens (18-105)
and when I use manual mode and set the F stop to 3.5 (the lowest it can go) it doesn’t make a difference to the focus of the background, as to when the F stop is a higher number.

what settings do i need to use so the background is more out of focus, or do i simply need to buy a 50mm lens?

youll have to come in closer to your subject kinda tricky with that lens because of it wide angle. but you can.

Shallow depth of field has three variables:
1) f-stop
2) Subject distance
3) lens length

Standing farther back and zooming in will get the background to separate the subject more.

Blurry b/g = shallow depth of field.

To get shallow dof you need wide aperture (f2.8 or wider), telephoto lens (100mm or more focal length) or a close subject to camera distance.

The reason that you are not getting any significant difference in dof at f3.5 is because that aperture is not wide enough for it to notice AND you are only getting f3.5 at the 18mm (wide angle) end. Wide angle lenses have inherently a deep dof.

Your best bet is to get an affordable fast prime lens like the 50mm f1.8 (the 50mm f1.4 would be better, but is more expensive).

I am planning to buy Nikon d90 but recently Nikon launched D5000 which is nearly similar to the D90 features. The main difference is on its price..it is $ 300 less than D90.
I just want to know why D5000 costs cheaper than D90 !! is there any technical difference or something differ in the features of these two !!

Answer by David M
The biggest differences will be in build quality and ease of using the camera in the manual mode. The D90 is meant for someone who has some photographic experience with SLR’s. The D5000 is designed for someone who is new to SLR cameras.

Image quality will be virtually the same. The D90 will do better at ISO settings above 800 but then only moderately.

I have been debating the same thing for two weeks now.. I’ve done so much research.. but I’ve finally ordered my d90 today… In the long run, you have more to work with on the d90. You can get any kind of lens because the d90 has a motor in the camera that will focus any lens. The best lenses for the d5000 are af-s lenses.. a bit more expensive.. Check Cameta auctions they have awesome bundle packages for either of them..
