Q&A: What would be a good choice digital camcorder that has hd for loud concerts?

I am an avid event attender looking for a video camcorder that is digital that has HD capability for around 200 dollars that will produce fantastic signal even when the music is very loud. I am also going to be export a DSLR camera soon, so if you know of a excellent mic that will fit a Canon 7d that would be suitable for this environment that would be okay too instead of the camcorder.

For REALLY LOUD AUDIO, there *must* be a way to control the mic gain – the automatic audio gain cannot deal with too-loud audio. The result will signal very muddy and there will be lots of static. At this moment, there are no dSLRs with any sort of manual audio control built-in. Most consumer camcorders have no manual audio control, either.

The Canon HF R series consumer cams have a rudimentary “Attenuator” setting. The HF M series and HF S series – and Sony HDR-CX500 series have more granular manual audio control.

With the Canon 7d, by a XLR adapter (see BeachTek or juicedLink) would be apt because you have control knobs on the XLR adapter to control the mic gain. Another option is to record the audio separately (see Zoom H2, H4, Tascam, M-Audio, Edirol and other field recorders).

When the video is imported to the computer for editing, import the audio from the field recorder, sync, then mute the poor audio captured by the camera or camcorder.

Personally, I prefer stereo audio for music. So either a stereo mic (Audio Technica AT-8022 – I have a AT-825, but it is no longer made… or a Shure VP88 or RODE NT4) or a couple of decent condensers (like a pair of RODE NT5 or NT55 on a dual clip mount with the mics in an X-Y configuration) would be apt.
