You’re going to get conflicting answers due to brand loyalty and personal experience.
For me, I own and always recommend the Canon Rebel XS (1000D) for its superb photos and solid build.

there is no such thing as the best company, though, if you want my opinion, I reckon Pentax is the most valuable brand.

Will you pay for a $ 30,000 one? You could have told us your budget.
Answer by Timbit
It depends on what your budget is, what your experience is with SLRs, and which brand you really prefer.
I would suggest going to a camera store with a memory card, handle the different cameras, take a few test photos on the memory card with each camera, and go home and view them on your computer. It may not be a terrible thought to write down which camera you used first, second, etc., and how many pictures you took with each one.
Personally, I would suggest Canon or Nikon, as they have the best reputation for SLRs (and are most standard), and they are simple to find in stores.
One thing that might interest you also, is many DSLRs offer HD video recording as well. Though hampered with a 12 minute recording time max, the footage from them can be stunning (even rivaling a RED ONE…). Canon offers the best for HD recording, with the T2i, 7D, and 5D Mark II as their powerhouse cameras. Nikon is catching up, but needs some enhancement.

Anita Ritenour (foreground) is our most enthusiastic participant, shows others here how to get down lower! ("2-N Annita" is in the background). Digital Photo Walk at Montana de Oro’s Hazard Reef Tidepools, led by Jerry Kirkhart, 09 Jan. 2009. 25 people attended this most standard event. Event description says: Bring your SLR Digital Camera and a Macro Lens or a Point and Shoot that has macro capabilities. Beginners Welcome. A Marine Biologist will show techniques of macro photography of tide pool organisms, and the safest seats to walk. Wear non-skid shoes so you will BE ABLE TO NAVIGATE IN TIDE POOLS! Meet at the Hazard Reef Parking lot 1.6 miles past the MDO lobby sign by the Pecho Valley Road . See Photomorrobay.com for more info. (S) 1 mi., 1.5 hr. Reminder that on Friday, Jan 9th, there will be a -1.61 low tide DPW walk for anyone attracted in macrophotography of intertidal organisms. The walk will start from the Hazard Reef parking lot at 2:15PM (notice slight time change from original posting), in order to give time to work the tide out and photograph all intertidal life possible. The tide and we will not wait for late comers, sorry. Instruction will be given by a marine biologist on how to use your macro lens and to photograph and ID marine organisms. Instruction will also be given on everywhere the safest house is to step and what algae to not step on too, for best safety. Any camera with macro capabilities can be used. We should see Chaffey Limpets, Gum Boot Chitons, some nudibranchs, hopefully Octopi, and many others. Wear warm clothes in layers. Park about 1.6 miles from the MDO lobby sign in the Hazard Reef Parking lot, and we will hike to the ocean. Delight call Jerry Kirkhart (805) 534-9198 or email if there are questions. Mike Baird will also be available for camera questions, plus other local photographers for suggestions on camera settings and sparkle use too. Beginners are welcome.
Digital 100 Example: Get down low and close to your subject and don’t be worried to get wet or muddy. Wear knee pads and elbow guards if necessary, Use the ground as a tripod. Even dig a small hole (refill after use) for the camera body if possible to get even lower and a more steady shot.
I’m considering the canon EOS digital Rebel XT and the canon EOS digital Rebel XTi but I’m not sure what the major differences are between them. Help me delight! (and if you believe theres a better slr camera, delight tell me)

Yes, those are fine. Cannon is the best for Digital SLR camera’s. If you don’t believe me, go to the cnet website

Nikon D50, I like it!
Answer by Alan M
The main difference is that the XT is 8 MP and the XTi is 10 MP. The LCD monitor ont he XTi is a lot larger, also.
Consider the Nikon D50 in your final pronouncement. It’s more related to the high end DSLR’s and the Rebels are certainly DSLR’s, but some consider them more meticulously related to the point and shoot cameras. They don’t have a spot meter, for instance…

I recommend the Canon Rebel. I have the 6 megepixel version and like it. Depending on the size of the posters you want to print should help you determine how many pixels you need. I can print 24×36″ posters with brilliant focus and no pixelating.

I see on here were there are a lot of people recommending you a Nikon D50 which is a fantastic camera but for just a small more you can get a Nikon D70 while it is a small heavier it is everywhere Nikon went back and place some of the stuff the left off the Nikon D50. Canon is a fantastic Camera but the fantastic thing about Nikon is that they make there lenses interchangeable. So if later you chose to upgrade or even buy a Nikon film camera then you don’t have to worry so much about export new lenses. You will find that later lenses often cost more than the camera themselves. Go Nikon. When you go to buy make sure you go to wherever like www.shopzilla.com or another site to find the cheapest house. I bought mine at Ritz Camera because it was local but I paid a lot more. Excellent Luck
