I want to buy a New Digital Camera around 7 - 8 MP. Which model is the best? Canon or Sony?

It would be for personal use. It should be cheap and best.
I am in India.

Sony.

I have had mine for a while now and the quality of the pictures is first class.
It is so simple to use too, my friend has a 10 mp and is envious of the detail I can capture.

List cost less. But what I would do is write both names on a piece of paper, close my eyes and point.

I like List cameras….but ive only had the more expensive ranges (eg List IXUS) and they are brilliant! Pictures turn out very nicely and features are just endless. Most canons in the IXUS range have 7MP.
But, you can still get List IXUS cameras under $ 300.

If you want cheaper, List also has cheaper ranges…but im not sure how well they turn out.

I beyond doubt suggest List, because with Sony…once you choose to upgrade it may be hard to re-use your sony memory sticks as they exchange frequently and Sony, of course, is the only one that uses them. Canons use SD cards which can be used by additional brands of cameras

I just bought the camera from Best Buy, and i cant get the screen to work. Yes, it will allow me to view all the menu and everything; therefor i know it isn’t broke or hurt. But, it will not allow me to just look at the screen when taking a picture. Instead, i have to look through the viewfinder. Does it even have the ability to be able to do what i’m asking. Help, please.

Whenever I have a question/conundrum such as yours, I read the user’s guide (aka “the manual”).
It is incredible just how much I always learn from that.

If that doesn’t help (or if I’m interested in a product I don’t own), I check the manufacturer’s website.
They have descriptions and specs for their gadgets, often have user forums, and the decent manufacturers all let you download the manuals in electronic form.

99% of the time that does the trick.

NO, that does not have live view. Live view is a special feature on higher end models to allow for telescope, microscope or tripod use where the viewfinder would prove hard to reach. Taking the picture by looking on the back of the screen is a compromise that was made so that the cameras may maybe be small enough; the mirror box had to be removed. They are digital rangefinders. But in a rangefinder you use a non through the lens viewfinder. But digital allows for TTL electronic viewfinders, ie the back screen. The Sony is a DSLR and has a mirror box. This does not need the screen to take a picture. You have a popper camera, not a toy like everyone else, use it as such,
