how to transfer videos from a sony handycam to the computer via disk?
I have a sony handycam and need to transfer a record from the camera to my computer. I have a disk inside the camera where I have the record stored on, but when I plug it into my computer, it does not show up when I go into it via “computer.” How do I get the the record from the disk to my computer?

In the camcorder menu there is a section called finalise (US finalize) this place the DVD into a format that your computer/DVD player can recognise. once you have done that, place the DVD into the layer in your computer (as long as you have a tray loading drive and not a slot) open the DVD via MY computer, do not play but open.
There will be a folder called Video_TS copy that to your computer, now the record is on your computer. if you want to edit the record and your control software will not recognise the record simply rename the files ending with VOB to MPG you will now be able to edit the record.

My ancient Sony HandyCam (from the mid-90s) no longer works, but I have a number of 8mm tapes with home movies that I want to convert to VHS or DVD. Is there a player for these tapes that would work with a PC or Mac? Are there additional options? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

look for a new handycam which plays Hi8 tapes. it will have usb and firewire output so you can hook it up to the pc and record them to the hard drive. Or you can get a dvd recorder with firewire input
