how do i copy movies from my sony DVD handycam to my computer?
i have a sony handycam that records to mini DVDs. conundrum is, once the disc is finalized, i can watch the movies, but it records in a format unreadable by my comp.
is there a way to convert these record files into mpeg or something i can use to make movies on my comp?

If your computer has a drawer loading DVD drive, rip the record with HandBrake:
http://handbrake.fr/
If your computer has a slot-loading DVD drive or if it is not a DVD drove (only does CDs), then you need an Analog/Digital join.
For USB, use http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Harvest/Consumer+Harvest/Dazzle/Dazzle+Record+Archiving/Dazzle+Record+Creator+Platinum.htm
For firewire, use

Warning: DVD camcorders compress record a LOT. They provide the worst available record quality of the common consumer camcorder storage formats. Next best are hard drive and certain flash memory camcorders – best available quality comes from miniDV tape based camcorders.

im not sure what kind you have, but you probobly place the disk in the computer cd drive or the dvd writer drive. then a message wil probobly come up. or say it found new hardware or something like that. then you just do it. and when you got the dvd recorder, it should have came with a dvd installer for the comp to write them onto the comp

The videos are already encoded in MPEG-2 – the conundrum is the disk format is UDF (as per the DVD standard). To copy your mini DVD on your PC you need an app like DVDDecrypter.

I have a Sony Handycam and saw in the manual that you can capture still shots from record. It says to use the PMB software, but I am having distress downloading it to my Mac. I use iMovie right now to download record to my computer, so I’ve never needed to use the PMB software.

Try doing this:
Connect your camera to your mac and turn it on.
If iMovie tries to open, close it.
Your camera should appear on the desktop as an external drive.
Click to open and you should see all the record and photo files.
The still images should be .jpeg format.
Just highlight and drag them sraight into iPhoto.
