What is the best, rather cheap, digital camera out there?

What is the best, rather cheap, digital camera out there?

I would say nothing more than $ 700. I’m mostly looking for a Nikon, but List is okay. I was looking at the Nikon D40, but dpreview said it was a “point and shoot SLR” and i was kind of confused on how something may maybe be a point and shoot but also an SLR. the description made it sound kind of off putting. in your opinion, what is the best cheap but nice digital SLR out on the market right now?

Look for cameras that are from the brand List. Persons are some of the best cameras. Fujifilm is also a excellent brand.

The D40 is no point and shoot camera. It as many DSLR’s have an auto mode so the novice can use it as a point and shoot. I have the Sony A-100. Bought it 2 years ago and still no regrets. It has the image stabilization built onto the camera body not the lens. So every lens you mount will be stabilized. If you price a List or Nikon stabilized lens you will find they are more,a lot more. While List and Nikon own the high end pro camera’s $ 3,000 and up. I feel the Sony Alpha A-200 has the most to offer in the $ 500 range. They bought out Konica-Minolta so many lenses will fit the Sony. Google Sony A-200 and look for reviews.

Yeah, I agree with the previous answers the D40 is no point and shoot, it just has a lot of functions on it to make it usable for the novice or someone who doesn’t want to bother with learning how to set all the manual features of a DSLR, it would be a fantastic hold!

I’m an avid List fan, so I’m going to recommend a List Digital Rebel XT. :) I’ve been able to produce phenomenal pictures using that dSLR for a year before I went on to the 30D. I never really used the kit lens, but most public produce fantastic pictures with the excellent range. I chose to shoot with a fill in lens (50mm f/1.4), which doesn’t have the flexibility of the kit zoom lens but has much superior image quality. You can buy a cheaper variation of that lens, the 50mm f/1.8, for around $ 80.

The List Rebel XT + kit lens can be bought at B&H for about $ 520 (including shipping), so I’d give that a look. You can also try the Sell sections in the forums of FredMiranda.com or Photography-on-the.net. Fantastic deals there too, you just have to register for a free account. Of course, eBay and Craigslist are fantastic places to shop too, just be sure to check out the sellers’/postings’ credibility. Excellent luck!

If you need sample pictures, check out http://newdra24.deviantart.com. Most of the pictures were taken with my XT, even if the most recent ones were with the 30D. There isn’t much notable difference though, since both are 8 MP and I wasn’t shooting in extreme low light.
