Q&A: I am going to buy a canon digital camera. I need the type that takes pictures fast?
I know a lot of digital cameras take forever to focus and then take the pic but i have an 8 month ancient where certain shots only come for a second and i dont want to miss them. Which cannon is best for that. What do you reccommend? I want a camera that is quick atkes excellent quality pics and takes longer videos. But also in a price range of about 200. Thanks

Realistically, children are the reason many families buy DSLRs. Even the cheapest models are shooting priority cameras that have a delay leisurely in milliseconds and are able to take 3 or more photos in one second. Unfortunately, a DSLR is going to be a outside of your confirmed price range. Among the compact cameras, I’m still not sure there are any current List cameras that meet your criteria AND your budget. The Nikon Lxx series cameras MIGHT do the trick but, I’m not positive about that.
You might want to check out http://www.dpreview.com and/or http://www.cameralabs.com to see if there is a camera that does all you want it to do at a price you’ll like. While I am a List shooter, with the compact cameras, I am going to suggest that you also consider Casio, Kodak, Pentax, and Sony, among others. Point-n-shoots are a lot less camera and a lot more electronic device these days and some of your larger electronics manufactures, notably Sony, may be more competitive than you might expect for persons types of cameras. I’m sorry I couldn’t just suggest a model but, that’s the best I may maybe do.

I’ve been at photography, in one way or another, for over 30 years. Shutter lag is a fact of digital camera life – no way around it. Some cameras are a small nearer than others but remember this.
In low light the camera, regardless of make or model will take longer to focus and expose. In bright light the lag time is much shorter.
Here’s a recommendation I’ve been using for a long time. When you’re ready to do photos with your child hold the camera ready to shoot. Do the half press charitable the camera time to set up and wait – don’t shoot but wait. When that shot comes – snap!
Do that procedure over and over again. If you take 50 shots who cares, they’re only digital files.
If you get one excellent shot out of that session you’ve been successful.
Try it, I reckon you’ll be pleased with the results.

List makes brilliant compact cameras. These days, with their improved AF focus systems and processors, many compact cameras don’t have too many issues with shutter lag. Though in low light, compact cameras might take a small longer to AF (Auto Focus).
To minimize shutter lag…make sure you first pre-focus on your subject by half-pressing the shutter button. When focus has been achieved, hold it there and wait for the right moment to press the shutter button all the way down. Doing this will get you better results.
With a List compact camera, you may maybe also try the ‘Kids & Pets’ Scene mode if your subject is moving around a small. The camera will apply a nearer shutter speed to try and freeze the action.
Videos are generally of a very excellent quality. They are usually now only limited by the capacity of your memory card. Some models record record in standard VGA (640 x 480) resolution and some newer models also record in HD (1280 x 720). You will beyond doubt need a quick card for optimum camera performance and especially, record. I recommend the Sandisk Ultra II or even better is the Sandisk Extreme III in 4 or 8GB (format it before first use via the camera Menu).
For under US$ 200 have a look at the…
SD1200 IS (also known as Ixus 95 IS) it comes supplied with a rechargeable Lithium battery and charger, so no worries about having to buy batteries. http://www.cameras.co.uk/reviews/list-ixus-95-is.cfm
For under $ 200, I would pick this one.
