Need help picking out a waterproof camera anyone have any suggestions or tips?

I have been looking at the Fuji film weatherproof camera in hot pink but then I saw the canon waterproof camera that looks nice but is much more expensive. I would love all input, suggestions, tips and all even if it is a totally different camera. I have a older model Kodak that is nice but not waterproof, I also have a Nikon D80 with 3 lenses but don’t want to carry it everywhere on our trip to Hawaii & get it stolen or damaged by water. So this will be a 3rd digital camera expecially for water activities.

Well, weatherproof doesn’t mean water proof, so you wouldn’t want to take any of those cameras under water. I hear good things about the fuji big job HD-3W, but I have never used one. My personal suggestion is to pick up an old Nikon F3 or F2 film camera for water photos. Those things are tanks, and I can attest to the unbelievable durability of the F3 personally. Mine has been dropped multiple times, been in the rain and snow, and I even had a piece of tape from a self loaded roll of film get stuck on the shutter curtain without suffering any loss in performance or accuracy. This is from a used camera that looked pretty tattered when I bought it.

The best part is, they are cheap, way cheap. These things costs thousands in the 80s, and commanded over $ 500 as recently as a couple of years ago. I got mine for about $ 125 with a 50mm lens. The real kicker is that you can often times use old Nikon lenses on new digital SLRs.

Since you’ll be in Hawaii you could use slide film during the day and fuji iso 1600 c-41 film at night. Of course not everyone likes film, and it it is a bit harder to use, but it is worth considering.

There’s lots of waterproof cameras out there. Is this just protection at the beach or are you going to take it diving with you? Here are my links to underwater cameras.

actually for the best picture quality underwater i would check out the olympus tough series. fuji and canon entered the underwater camera market this year while olympus has been making them for the past 4 years and have perfected their Technology. i personally own one and they take awsome pictures. the tough series also are very durable so you can drop them and not haveto worry about them breaking.
