How does 35 mm take a picture compared to a SLR digital camera?

Answer by Mere_Mortal
35mm generally has better quality but that is changing quick.

I have seen prints from the EOS-1 Mark III ds that rival standard format. It won’t be long before all digitals, resolution wise, will look better than 35mm.

Remember with a digital file you do not have to worry about fingerprints, lint, curved negatives, and dyes that fade.

If you plot to shoot anything smaller than 6x7cm…I have to recommend digital.

35mm pictures have traditionally been of higher quality, exhibiting blacker blacks and whiter whites, but now, digital cameras are advancing at incredible speeds. With megapixels commonly in the double digits, quality in resolution has become unbelievable.

Also keep in mind the ease in working with digital photographs. Digitals can easily be edited, touched up, changed to black & white, and previewed. Film has to be developed and then printed, and that is a long process. As an art student who does 35mm photography in a dark room, I know how much time this can take. Really, today, I would beyond doubt get a DSLR. The time saved is worth a fortune, and prices are exceptionally cheap now.

Check out a Sony A100 or a Nikon D40, two of my favorite budget DSLRs.

To apparent things up, 35mm doesn’t necessarily mean film because digital cameras can be 35mm as well.

Both have their positives and negatives, though I’m pretty sure digital will take over film someday.

Personally, the only reason I reckon that film is better is because the enlarged images come out clearer than digital… but, the more you print film the more it fades… and digital never fades.

But overall, I reckon the picture quality is basically the same.

Digi cameras work only if the batteries work. A decent film SLR has a complete manual mode that allows them to work without power.

Drop a digi, and it’s goodby, they’re mostly cheap plastic. I’ve got an ancient Minolta with a dent in the prism housing. Still works like a champ.

Skin tones and gradients are still far superior on film.

Digi’s are well loved for one reason only: convenience.

If I’m reading your question correctly, you’re asking how a 35mm SLR film camera makes an image, compared to a DSLR.

Really there’s not much difference, except that instead of having a photoelectric sensor, the film camera records on film.

The film is basically a roll of plastic which has chemicals on it

The chemicals react to light, producing the innumerable tones and colours of the scene.

These chemicals have to be treated with additional chemicals before you can really see the image, so the film has to be developed.

Then prints are made, or in the case of slide film, the image is projected on a screen.

Hope this helps.

Depth of field demo – f/22
digital slr cameras compare

I’m showing my daughters a bit about how cameras work. This was taken with my Nikon D50 digital SLR, 50mm lens, ISO 1600, f/22 for maximum depth of field. (The bit of center blur is because the exposure was so slow — 1.3 seconds — and it was hand-held.) Notice that you can also see reflections in the MacBook screen clearly.

Compare with the f/1.8 version.

Hi!
I am interested in buying a Pentax K10D digital SLR camera body.
Since I will be travelling around in the near future, I was looking for prices in different countries:

Amazon in US. $ 650
Amazon in Japan: $ 840

Surprice!! I always thought cameras were chaper in Japan, but it is not? How come?!
The stuff that’s built-in (batteries charger etc) seem same too.
Is there any additional cost except for postage when buying in US (I want 1-2 delivery to my hotel) ?
How does it work with the tax since the rate varies with state in US?

If any person have experience comparing the prices US vs Japan, or experience in buying cameras online in US, I am very interested in knowing more!
(…or does any person know a excellent camera shop in Chicago?)
FYI, I will be travelling to both places to I will only need to pay domestic postage fee!

everything is pretty cheap in the US

Answer by Albert P
Yes they are cheaper but the price difference is so small that shipping it from japan will cause you to lose money on the deal. Besides most of the cameras are calculated in japan and made in china so the price difference of the usa version and the japanese version will not be much unless the japanese model has more featrues which would not suprise me. The japanese makers also know that the japanese kids will buy the cameras like hot cakes but the american consumer will most likely be a older person that is more paricular about money. Just buy the American camera my Japanese girlfirend is saying you should.

Yes it will likely be cheaper in the US versus Japan.

The main reason in one word is “Volume”. When I used to travel abroad, I used to reckon the same business and quickly learned that the US buying power (volume buys) allows us to buy harvest for much less and this allows us to offer them for much cheaper prices than most additional places.

One word of caution but. I’ve found that US electronics only come with a US or N. American warranty. This earnings if something happens to your camera then you cannot get warranty service in your country and instead would have to pay for the repair.
