Have a look at the pentax w90.
It is pretty much everything-proof, dust, sand, mud, shock and water proof. So it is a GREAT camera to take on holiday.
it has some other fantastic features like HD movie capture and 12 mp.
it is pretty cheap as well, around $ 330 which is cheap for a camera like this.

I dont know much about the ex-g1 so i cant help you there.

Hope that helps!

Materials for waterproof KAP rig
canon digital camera waterproof

Take a piece of pie, a cup of your favorite beverage and sit down… because I’ll tell you the description of this picture. :-)

I was taking aerial pictures by a kite (which is called Kite Aerial Photography or KAP, for small) and an ancient and cheap webcam. The webcam died (natural causes, nothing KAP related), then I bought another, better digital camera. This one also died in a few days (never flew with it, BTW), and is now being "repaired" on warranty (for only God knows how much long). I still have another camera, a Canon Powershot S60, which I like and adore, and didn’t want it to be exposed to all the wind, sand and water of the seats we usually spend our holidays. So, I was not KAPing for some time. :-

As we will spend a few days on Jericoacoara (considered one of the most gorgeous seats in Brazil) and I was itching to KAP again, I chose to take a chance with our last surviving digital camera… but as safe as possible!

In this picture you can see the materials for my future waterproof KAP rig. It’s relatively simple (the camera will always point straight down), set alight, and most vital, safe (for both the camera and anything between the ground and the rig).

I started with a plastic box with excellent sealing on the lid, and cut its bottom (as you can see in the picture), because it was not transparent. I cut a piece of a CD jewel case to take in that, and used silicone rubber to "glue" it. As the Canon lenses are extendable, I made a kind of styrofoam mold for the camera, to hold it tightly and gently in house. Two bits of foam will make sure there’s no space for the camera to shake inside the box.

To hold the box to the picavet, and also give a bit of pressure over the lid, I’ll use two pairs of velcro (which will be fastened to the conservational wire around the box, in the picture). I estimate just one pair of velcro would be enough, but why take chances?

One of the terrible things about this rig it its size… but on the other hand, I can use if for nearly any other point-and-shoot camera (I just have to change the styrofoam mold).

In anticipation of now, this is the fruit of a day’s work. If everything goes well, I’ll come back next week and have some new KAP pictures in my stream!

So, how was your pie? I hope you loved it… :-)

Edit: I flew with this rig, the results are here!

I am thinking of export this, but I have a few questions:

Do they take excellent pictures? I am kinda trying to be a photographer so want to be able to take really excellent pictures. I already have a canon digital that’s 10 mega pixels that can take fantastic pics.

Can you zoom out far?

Does it take detailed close ups?

is it worth the money?

And any other opinions on it would be fantastic, thanks!

If you’re taking photographs, you ARE a photographer…but this camera is not aimed at the professional promote.
Check the quality of the pictures at the D10 flickr group (there’s always a flickr group)…
http://www.flickr.com/groups/canond10/
Click on a thumbnail to go to the photo’s page and then on “Actions” and select “all sizes” for a huge image.

Not a particularly long zoom range…remember that the zoom has to be contained within the waterproof case. All the waterproof cameras have wide-to-small-telephoto zooms.

Macro lets you get to an inch or so from your subject.

Yes, it’s worth the money (though I’d prefer an Olympus Tough).
