Should I buy Casio 9MP Exilim EX-Z85 Orange Digital Camera or the the FujiFilm J38 12MP digital camera?

The first one is a small grown-up but got really excellent ratings from consumer reports. The other one just came out..

They are both fantastic cameras, both will do a fantastic job at taking pictures. Though, there’s one aspect you have to look at these days, and that is the video qualitites. The Casio one records .mov movies (very Mac compatible) and the FujiFilm records AVI (works fantastic with both Macs and Windows pcs) If you use Windows XP,Vista or Windows 7 you can easily edit videos with Windows Movie Maker.

I would say the FujiFilm wins by a small because of its increased resolution and the compatibility with the mainstream computers.

digital camera consumer reports

PriceRitePhoto’s store, photo by Brooklyn Photographer Don Wiss

I received a troubling email earlier now from Don Wiss saying that he received a phone call now from someone telltale him that if he didn’t leave the country he would be killed. Wiss also reported another call from an anonymous caller accusing him of running him out of business. Don Wiss is a Brooklyn photographer that I have mentioned previously in my posts about sleazy New York bait and switch camera operators in commission out of Brooklyn. Wiss has done an brilliant job chronicling the actual storefronts of many of the shady camera dealers in Brooklyn and has provided helpful visual information for consumers that might do business with these operators and in some case scam artists.

Wiss posted the photo above of the sleazy camera operator PriceRitePhoto that I had been previously threatened by.

Although I suppose after hearing an actual voicemail of a camera dealer threatening to break a customer’s neck that it shouldn’t bolt from the blue me to learn of Don’s calls now it still sickens my stomach. How is it that these criminals can act with immunity right in Spitzer’s back yard? How can camera stores get away with death threats here now in the year 2005 in the United States of America.

Printed below is the email Wiss sent me earlier now.

"As you no doubt know, someone posted a link to your Brooklyn camera tale on Slashdot on 12/1. One of the comments mentioned my donwiss.com/pictures/BrooklynStores web site. I had the most hits ever.

Yesterday donwiss.com had a DOS attack. 497 simultaneous relations. My host cut me off so not to bring down the other clients on that ma?tre d'h?tel. I then switched my dns to a backup host.

Now I received two phone calls at work. First one like blaming me for pouring them out of business. Says they have already shut it down. But, of course, he didn’t tell what business, and they had caller id turned off.

I then got a second phone call. He told me to watch my back. He said if I don’t leave the country I will be killed. Now nowhere at my site do I pass any judgment on the dealers here. So why blame me? My question is have you been threatened? Of course, living here in Brooklyn makes me a convenient target."

To hear the tale directly from Don click here to read his post in the rec.photo.digital newsgroup at Google.

I reckon Wiss has done us all a favor by showing us the actual storefronts of many of the Brooklyn businesses doing business online, and he’s right, he makes no judgement as to the credibility of any of these operators. Recently through Wiss’ site I found evidence that might suggest the real title-holder of PriceRitePhoto is an individual by the name of Chaim Pikarski.

Wiss is taking this threat to his life seriously and said he would be filing a police report now.

As a high school graduation present, I want a digital camera. I’ve been researching hundreds of digital cameras for numerous weeks now, and after visiting consumer reports (and about a dozen other review sites) I’ve finished back at square one.

I’m looking for a subcompact camera, that’s simple to use, takes fantastic pics with vivid color, durable, able to take pics in low set alight, and preferably has an image stablizer setting. I want to have basic options (ie: black/white, etc), but i don’t need frills such as slideshow with mp3, etc.

I’m 18 being ancient, and basically just want a camera that will take fantastic pics with my friends when we go out. I’m tired of the ignorant sales ppl at all the electronic stores attempting to sell me cameras with features i have no use for. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

the minimum Mega pixels you really need is 4megapixels. Be sure that the optics are fantastic–I completely place all my trust in Nikon. I have a cool pix 3100, and its a small not-so-like 3 mega pixel camera that takes fantastic pictures. I have made 4″x6″ prints–from the photo seats (like Target stores), and the pictures are BETTER that my Canon 35mm “professional” camera!!!!

As for the feature of image stabilization, that applies for moving videos, not necessarily still pics. BTW, my Nikon can be found on ebay for way less that $ 100!!!

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you and your bright future ahead!!!! Live life, prosper, and take lots of pictures–digital of course!!!!

I was doing the same thing. Checking consumer reports, etc., etc., ! I finally bought a used camera from a friend who got it on e-bay! If I was you, I would go to e-bay, look for the features you want-compact-max pixels-etc. for the least dollars. Limit it to only buys in the United States, this way you won’t have to worry about it being hung up in some airport! You will end up with a fantastic camera for an inexpensive price and it will last you being and being! I use mine on job-sites and it takes a beating. For $ 50.00 I have far gotten my use / dollars ratio beat!!! And it takes awesome pictures!!! Best of luck!!!

I want to highly recommend the buy of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The sparkle setting for “red-eye” correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It’s very small and set alight;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful “signal” videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it’s built-in microphone;
7. And the price is a mere $ 120 [sold at Samy's Camera, Staples.com.]

Excellent luck!
