Find a nice silent house, get comfortable and READ & STUDY the Title-holder’s Manaul that came with the camera. To master your camera requires study, just as it does for math, description, science, etc.
Take it one feature or setting at a time, study it, practice it, and when you feel comfortable with it go to the next feature or setting.
You might also benefit from the Magic Lantern Guide To the Nikon D40x. It will make a nice supplement to the Title-holder’s manual.
There is a review of your camera in the Oct. 2007 issue of Shutterbug Magazine (shutterbug.com).

The link doesn’t work.
To get a larger gap, switch the camera to A and go the control wheel. A less vital digit (like 5.6) is a larger gap than a larger digit (like 22).
You’re not retarded, just inexperienced.
Answer by George Y
Anthony’s right. You’re just inexperienced. Estimate what, I’m more inexperienced than I’ll be tomorrow, so we’re even!
Again, I’m sorry to say that your link isn’t working, but here’s a link to a very thorough guide to your D40x (and D40) that I reckon you should print out and save.

And here’s some thoughts on how to improve your photos.

And most of all, take a ton of pictures, at all different settings, different angles, and with different framing views (zoom). Don’t rub out the “terrible” pictures but look at them in the computer. Learn from your mistakes and leave your ego in the top drawer.
If you must post-process your photos in your computer, make it minimal. I prefer the art to come from the camera and photographer and not be made from computer software. It’s like taking the Mona Lisa and tinting some of the colors because it doesn’t contest your livingroom.
If you have other question, PLEASE question. We all were once everywhere you are and most of us drift back there from time to time! I hope this helps you.
What do you reckon? Answer below!
I got the Nikon D40X camera for Christmas. And I was wondering if there’s a way to make it so you can see what you’re taking on the show screen? I can’t seem to figure it out. Thank you.

No, D40x doesn’t had liveview, you have a nice DSLR camera, just try to get used to it view the small viewfinder, you see exatly the picture from the lens, there’s lots of small icon in the view finder that had helpful, read the manual.
Answer by fhotoace
Live View was something that has never been intended to use for critical focus or adjusting the cameras settings while composing the shot. The skills renowned from by 35mm SLR cameras has been transferred to the DSLR’s. Your dependence upon Live View to compose your images will have to end. Composing and shooting a camera at arms length is just begging for camera movement.
While there are a few new cameras that sport Live View, they are rather expensive. Take a look at the Nikon D300 and D3 for the cameras in your camera sytem.

It’s not a feature available on the D40x. There’s a shutter and mirror in the way of the sensor.
You should use the viewfinder–the camera focuses quicker and you get a view with the actual photons used for imaging and not some screen that’s low resolution and smeary.
I have to laugh when one answerer berates you for asking about this feature, poo-poos it, and then in the same breath points out that the feature is on the highest end digital SLRs. Seems intellectually inconsistent to me.
There are times when such a feature is really helpful, but it’s not the best way to take a photo. The Live View feature on an SLR is best used for things like teaching a class or macro work, which are honestly specialized. For general picture taking, trust me, you are far, far better off with the viewfinder. Notice how your D40x is way quicker? That’s because the period focusing in an SLR is quicker than the contrast-based focusing used in Live View.
