Can you help me decide if I should keep my new Olympus digital camera.?

Can you help me decide if I should keep my new Olympus digital camera.?

I just got a new Olympus FE-230 7.1 digital camera. It takes an xD memory card. My Gateway Media Center laptop has a port that accepts SD size memory cards, but not the smaller xD. I have not even taken the camera out of the box. I’m thinking I should exchange it for a camera that requires SD cards so it will be compatible with my computer . Please help me decide. I don’t need anything fancy, just a basic camera and this one seems to fit the bill. Would I be better off with one that takes SD cards? (for computer compatibility) Seems like there are more SD cards on the market than xDs. Does that mean they are better? If YOU were buying a camera today would it make any difference to you if it took an SD card or an xD card? Thanks.

Yes, get yourself a Kodak. SD’s are better, more compatible, and cheaper than xD’s.
If you don’t want to change, however, you could buy an external card reader for about $ 10.

I would buy one that takes an SD card..
Since I have a 1gig and 2gig card already…

I wouldn’t switch storage media size.

The camera that you purchased is a very nice camera and is inexpensive. I would say that you should keep the camera and that you should purchase a card reader or just use the USB cable that came with the camera(even though it is a little slower and will eat up some battery life) but you can recharge the battery and as long as you keep up with that you should just use the USB cable that is in the box.

Keep the camera.

SD is not better or worse by the way, but olympus and fuji both make XD and that is one way they are able to compete in the Digital Camera mkt. by making proprietary accessories.

It’s no big deal that your computer does not have a slot for the xD card. Spend another ten bucks and get an xD card reader or just use the USB cable that undoubtedly came with your camera. SD is just the most common card out there now. It’s not necesarily better. I’d probably stick to SD cards, just because I have a reader already, but not for any other reason.

Just use a card reader, they get around a lot of the problems associated with using the camera as a drive.

Good answers so far but here are links to a couple of multi-card readers.

These are at a reliable on line vendor but you can also get them at box stores like Wally World, Target, office supply and electronics specialty stores (if they haven’t all closed in your area).

Also, be sure to check you computer to see if it has card reader slots already installed. I was helping one person who was getting ready to buy a card reader and when she gave me the specifications I mentioned that there should be a little door with a bunch of slots behind and “Voila!” her problem was solved.

HTH. Email if you have questions.

USB cords are generic, get a replacement at Radio Shack or Staples office supply. They come in 2 styles, mini and micro. Newer cameras tend to use the micro, just take camera to store to be sure it fits.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH2
Updating the earlier GH1 digital compact and utilising the same Micro Four Thirds system setup as Olympus, the GH2 is in some respects a miniature DSLR. While that means it won't fit in the average pocket, the advantage here is the highest resolution on test, at 16.05 megapixels from a newly developed 18.31-megapixel Live Mos sensor.
