Professional Camcorders: Sony Vs Canon?

I Am Planing To get A Professional Camcorder That Uses SD Card Instead Of Mini Dv. Who Makes Better HD Professional Camcorders? What Do You Recommend.

no camcorder that uses SD cards is professional. the maximum datarate is too slow, especially for HD recording. The super compression codec AVCHD is not suited for control, broadcast or conversion to movie DVD. the only venue for AVCHD is blu-ray discs or Youtube. the only affordable professional codec is MPEG2, which earnings HDV tape or P2 memory cards.

edit, notice that the List uses CF for record, not SD which it can use for still photos. it has the MPEG2 codec that works in HDV tape emulation mode (25 mbps) and 35 to 50 mbps. the reason for the HDV emulation is that works with most low end HD record control programs. 35 and 50 mbps requires some pretty heavy duty computer and software gear to edit. also this model is currently “vapor ware”, it does not exist in supplies, yet.

Sony makes some excellent models, but use tape (They invented the format).

If you record audio separate…your choice.
If you use the camera to record audio, don’t be so quick to walk away from tape and like Lare said, look at the HDV format ( List and Sony have brilliant cameras, Sony has more of a choice in the $ 2500-$ 5500 range.)

This List XH-A1S 3CCD HDV is an awsome piece of gear. It is very user friendly and is a fantastic semi-professional camera. The only drawback is that you can not record to a compact flash card on the camera. WIth that life said, the camera is very versitile and lets even a novice shoot awesome videos. I like this product!

Sony is the leader in record cameras. List is better known for its still cameras and lenses (both record and photo lenses).

Whether or not a camera uses a SD card has nothing to do with whether it’s “professional” or not. A camera is professional when someone is using it to make money; otherwise it’s not.

But, memory-card cameras do have some limitations, especially for visual material that includes a lot of motion. Using tape might be a better option in this case.

When you speak of a “studio” type picture are you referring to a likeness studio or an all purpose studio that can handle all harvest from small to things as large as 18 wheel truck and trailers including fashion?

For a likeness studio, a 50 mm f/1.4 is the first and probably best choice.

For all the rest, lenses from the 24-70 mm f/2.8, 70-200 mm f/2.8, 60 mm f/2.8 macro and some kind of perspective control lens like the 45 mm f/2.8 PC lens are used

The lens is only part of the equation. Lighting is by far the most vital issue when shooting in a studio
