It has miniDV video cassetes and I believe a DV cord. All I have are USB outlets on my computer.

Connect the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port of the computer using a firewire cable. Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing.

USB will not work. USB-firewire cable/converter adapter things will not work.

The camcorder needs to be in “Play” or “VCR” mode. Microsoft MovieMaker will “Capture” the video (if it does not, try WinDV). Apple iMovie will “Import” the video.

If you do not have a 1394 port on your computer, hopefully you have an available expansion slot (PCMCIA or ExpressCard) so you can add one.

If there is no expansion slot so there is no way to add a firewire port, you can get an analog/digital bridge (like those from Pinnacle – the Dazzle). Video quality will not be as good as a DV transfer.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don’t come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.
