it’s where you connect the external flash – like the Canon 480EX flash for example… normally used by professionals and more experienced photographers…

Answer by Andre M
Its called a hotshoe and is used to connect external flashes like the 430EX II and the 580EX II as well as wireless flash trigers and flash sync cords.

It’s called a hotshoe or hot shoe and as somebody has said it’s where you plug in an external flash. The EOS XSi also has a built-in flash (I know because I have one) which pops up when you need it but an external flash is generally more powerful and can also be mounted off of the camera (but still plugged into the hotshoe) to give different lighting effects.

See http://img.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/K100D/ZKITFLASH.JPG for a picture of a flash mounted on a camera.

Its called a hotshoe. Its usually used to attach external flashes such as the 220EX, 340EX II, and 580EX II Speedlites. It is also used to for wireless flash transmitters, PC synch adaptors, off shoe flash cords, etc.
Examples:
580EX II:

MT-24EX:

nikon PC synch adaptor:

There are also some accessories that simply use it as a mount, such as this tripod level:

On camcorders such as the Canon HV20, the advanced accessory shoe can be used with devices such as the VL-1 video light, VFL-1 video flash light, and the DM-50 Directional Stereo Microphone.

Note that on many cameras the hotshoe is black rather than silver.

It’s called a Hot Shoe and it’s for additional flashes that work better than the pop up flash.

Answer by VINTAGE MUSIC
What IS an affordable price? I own a Sony DSC-H2 I paid $ 341 but found I paid a bit too much. You can’t do everything with this camera but it has 12X optical 6 megapixels, and image stablizer. Comes with battery charger. Takes great shots but credit that with photographer haha .There are cameras out there with 8 & 10 megapixels. A lot of excellent cameras out there from Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and Sony.

Answer by George J
In an article from NY Times. Only one camera the Pentax offers a truce mechanical stabilizer. All Others just bump up the ISO or apply antiblur softward. Hopes this helps.
