The top digital camera companies are Canon, and Sony.

In general, Canon makes the best digital cameras and by a VERY wide margin, makes the best digital SLR cameras. Camera after camera, across the board, Canon outperforms the competition. The difference becomes more dramatic, the higher up in price you go, particularly the SLR market.

Sony, however, makes two important cameras better than Canon. The DSC-H2/DSC-H5 ultrazoom cameras are better than the comparable Canon cameras (the Canon Powershot S2IS and S3IS). Also, Sony currently makes the best fixed lens (ie non-dSLR) digital camera on the market, the DSC-R1. These two cameras are what most people are looking for when they want a high end camera.

canon, nikon, olympus, fuji and sony for most and panasonic too. more pro users might also use hasselblad’s digital camera and digital back. even though most of the pro market is held by canon and nikon, kodak seems to be more popular with the consumer market.
