How do I manually change the F-stop on a Nikon D50?

I need to change the F-stop on my Nikon D50, and can’t find the owner’s manual. Does anyone know how to change it?

I assume your trying to manually control the aperture?

Put the dial on “A”.

Set your aperture there.

I am thinking of changing my Nikon D50 so i can use it for astrophotography.I have a good selection of lenses for the D50 and thought a more modern body might make a difference to the quality and variety of my astropics.

The lenses will work on any Nikon DSLR but with some caveats:

If they are DX lenses you won’t get full frame coverage on FX cameras. The camera detects the lens and crops the viewfinder and image accordingly. This means 5MP images from the D3, D3s and D700.

They will need AF switched off on the higher end camera bodies (D90 up) as these bodies also have a focus motor.

If they are the same age as the D50 they may not quite be up to the latest and greatest 12Mp resolution cameras. You’ll need to shoot and see. I would suggest that the 18-55 might get a showing up, shoot NEF (RAW) where you can with this lens.

EDIT: My mistake I forgot the D50 had a focus motor in the body. It is the newer Nikon lenses for the D40 on that need the af switched off at the lens on higher end bodies. My bad.

The D50 lenses you have will work perfectly with every Nikon DSLR from the D90 on up.
The D40, D40x, D60, D3000, & D5000 do not have internal autofocus motors and will only AF with AF-S or AF-I lenses. They’ll also work with Sigma HSM optics.

And you don’t have to turn off the AF (huh?) as your D50 has the same internal AF motor as the current D90, D300, D300s, D700, D3, D3x, and such.

On full-frame cameras (FX) such as the D700 and D3 series, the camera will automatically switch to DX mode when a DX lens is mounted. Nikon wisely designed this in to all FX bodies.,

My daughter uses her D50 and shares lenses with other members of our family who shoot D70, D200, & D300 cameras without a problem.
