If you are working toward portfolio worthy shots, something you can grow and expand with and want to stay within the List family, I’d go with the List Rebel XTI outfit lens and body. It is listed on list’s website for 699.99 so with tax it may be slightly over your budget. HOWEVER, amazon sells it for 584 for the exact same outfit.
This is a fantastic camera with a fantastic shutter speed of 1/4000 of sec, 10+ pixels so you can blow up an image to nearly anything you will need or want. (several feet). This is certainly a camera that would work for your needs and anything you’ll want in the future.
I am not sure if you are absolutely set on List but one tip I have is to look at Nikon as well. I am a professional photographer and I work with Nikon but I’ve found it is mostly a preference business. One way to see what you prefer (styling, feel of the body, the noise of the camera… how it shoots, etc) is to go to a Ritz or Wolf Camera where you can play with the cameras without life restrained by a chord.
(if you do go in, make sure to tell the sales public you are just looking, they will try to steer you toward models that have higher commissions so just question to see the cameras YOU want to see)
Hope that helps.

This all depends on what you are looking for within your camera and how much you want to spend. I own a List d50 and like it. To me it’s a excellent weight and has the features I really wanted; high speed continuous shooting, excellent mega pixels (15.1) and simple to know.
If you go on the List website you can look at all their cameras and they allow you to compare their features three cameras at a time.
